Do not understand how these coins could still show up at the mint Are you talking about today at the Mint Boutique? When did they come in? A few weeks ago when they first appeared, they said no more will be coming in. |

Moneypenny, yes it is today at the mint boutique. I am trying to get a sneak peak of the dragonfly when they told me about the arrival of gold coins today.

what do you mean they barely grade as MS60. are they that bad?

All 3 of my $5 gold pieces are at least MS60 or higher. The reverse and obverse both have lots of luster. The reverse has few bag marks while the obverse has a handful.

yeah that makes more sense since these coins were never in circulation. I'm still confused as to whether the PHS is worth the premium or not!

Are there HS coins at the Boutique or only Premium Coins?
Are you referring to the 1912 $5 coin or the 1912 $10 when you say they are not worth the extra dough?
As for the MS-60, are you referring to the 1912 $5 coin or the 1912 $10 coin?
Are there any more 1914 $5 coins left?

Moejaber: The coins that I received from online orders are like what jsinger21 described. The 1912 $10 coin that I saw at the boutique are quite bad in my opinion.
MoneyPenny: The boutique have a few Premium $5 ( around 6 I think. They only have 1 1914 PHS $5). They have lots of PHS and HS $10 and around 8 1912 $10 HS. I think the PHS $5 is not worth the extra dough. They dont have any 1914 $5 HS. They however do have 1913 HS $5 when I am there.

If I want more 1914 $5 hand selected, my rep can probably squeeze another one or two. I already have all 3 coins from 1912 to 1914. I don't know if I want to spend almost $600 on another coin.

Actually, I got one of each of the $10 coins... got some nice beautiful Hand Select coins at the Mint Boutique. By the time I left (after 3 hours there), there were only 2 - 1912 HS $10 coins left (I looked at 5 of them, and chose the best of the bunch) and of the two left, one was really beat up; 8 - 1913 HS $10 coins (I chose the best that looked like a premium hand-select); and 8 - 1914 HS $10 (which I also chose the best of the bunch again). The $10 PHS left weren't worth the premium cost. However, there was one that could have easily graded MS64 and it was pretty georgous! IMHO, if sent to PCGS would grade minimum MS64 or 65, but that was bought by a collector while I was there. The leftover of 1913 and 1914 $10 PHS were bad... not worth the extra cost. For the remaining $5 PHS - not worth it. MJT bought la-creme de la-creme coins! Nice score!! The 1912 and 1913 $5 PHS were still available at the store - but not worth the premium cost, and the hand-selects that I have in my collection looks a lot better than those in the remaining PHS at the store. The remaining 1913 $5 HS were just so-so... seems the earlier releases looked better. There were no 1912s and no 1914s $5 HS. Here is my 1912 $10 HS, considering most conditions are not that great... and that there were no Premium Hand Selects.   Edited by Coinsplus

The first round, released by the Mint seemed to be of better quality for the $5 HS coins when I compare to what is being distributed now.
But for some strange reason, the $10 HS coins at the store look a lot better than what I received the from the Mint directly (and I order each of the years)! Hence, me buying another round to get the best of the best of HS $10 coins. My wife was not pleased with my decision tonight = dog house.

You got yourself lots of coins there eh? it's just surprising that there might be differences in grades between what is supposed to be of the same quality!

There is definitely differences in the grades. I noticed with the PHS vs HS (the ones at the store), the fields are just a tad bit cleaner, and certainly more lustre. That was about it. But, when I compare the 1913 $5 PHS that were being sold at the store, to my 1913 $5 HS that I acquired earlier, mine looks better and without the premium cost.
