Here is my 1912 $10 coin coin. I purchased it online, not at the Mint Boutique. It is a hand select one. What grade would you give it?

dafonz, I think the mintage is 91 for 1913. I have personally seen some of the premium stuff. Quite bad. I did have a set of the premium $5. However, I purchased them all with a loop in my hand. I agree with the post by tesino on RFD that in general the PHS coins are better quality. However, there are lots of PHS coins that are not superior in quality to HS

I compared two 1913 $10 HS that I bought for friends, with my 1913 PS $10....the HS had perhaps one or two more bag marks in each of the fields on the obverse than the PS. With the naked eye, the differences are imperceptible, perhaps the PS has nicer luster, certainly not worth the premium. Everyone seems quite happy with the price paid for HS, with the PS's a bit more hit and miss. With 3 visits to the RCM boutique, and 2 to J&M, I have seen about 25 PS $10's, 12 1912 HS $10's, and about a dozen 13 & 14 HS.s. I have seen 4 PS $5, and bought one, but it's so close to my HS 1914 $5 in condition, I'm glad the premium was a bit more modest than the 10's.

@moneypenny, that's a nice ten...I have seen this coin in person, and only with magnification can you see the scratches in the fields. considering how few 1912's were offered, I think they are exceptional value considering their history and luster.

MJT: You sure?
I have these as the pop for the PHS $5
1912 = 62 1913 = 45 1914 = 121
Plus the 140 in the 6 coin set too

Dafonz,
My numbers are 1912 = 50 1913 = 91 1914 = 150 plus the 140 in the premium set. This numbers are from way back in November when I ordered. Not sure if they are updated recently.

Ah ok could be, I guess I got in late in the game when ordering one of the gold coins, I ordered a HS 1914 $10 gold coin from the mint, it will be my first gold coin, I figured it might as well be one of those instead of a brand new coin, as it maybe my only gold coin I will ever buy...well maybe lol

MJT: Dang it. I have a PHS $5 on order now, but am seriously considering cancelling it now with the numbers being twice what I thought they were.

These numbers were an estimate, if you refer back to about page 30 it is quoted as an estimate. The actual release is: Quote:
1912 = 62 1913 = 45 1914 = 121
Plus the 140 in the 6 coin set too
If anyone disagrees they should call the Mint to verify for themselves.

Keep in mind that the 140 Premium sets refers to 140 of each of the 3 $5 and $10 dollar gold coins

For those stating that the individual PHS $5 coins are 62 - 1912, 45 - 1913 and 121 - 1914, (total is 228 coins), those numbers can't be correct given the Mint's official press release stated the following:
Premium Hand-Selected 6-Coin Set (140 sets - $12,000 each) Premium Hand-Selected 1912, 1913 and 1914 $5 single gold coins (291 coins - $875 each) Premium Hand-Selected 1913 and 1914 $10 single gold coins (4,869 coins - $1,750 each) Hand-Selected 1912, 1913 and 1914 $5 single gold coins (5,050 coins - $500 each) Hand-Selected 1912, 1913 and 1914 $10 single gold coins (18,950 coins - $1,000 each)
I am more inclined to believe CC-Ottawa estimates. There would be a discrepancy of 63 PHS $5 coins. I am very positive that the Mint's press release can't be that off.

@MoneyPenny, your 1912 $10 coin seems to have full have bag marks in the fields of the obverse.. With the lighting source dim on the coin, I would prefer to see your coin in brighter light source. I am not sure if your capsule just has dust all over it when you took the picture.

^^^^^^^ The dust is on the outside of the capsule. Yes, there is a fair amount of bag marks on the coin but not an excessive amount. You can't see it because of the low light. The bag marks are similar to coins we see on this forum. But no scratches or chips on the rim.
