Hello

My dad has recently dug out his coin collection from when he was younger and we have come across two coins/tokens that we can't identify. They seem to have eastern style markings on them. The left hand coin is about 22mm across and 3mm thick. The right hand coin 20mm across and 1mm thick. He has had them both since at least the early 70's but isn't sure where they came from. Are they actual coins, tokens or modern knock offs?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

They both appear to be Islamic beyond that I really can't tell where they are from. I have a number of these in my collection for many years and still haven't been able to ID them. Hopefully someone here will be able to help, but these coins are difficult to attribute. Wish I could be of more help.

left hand coin is Afghanistan, Falus, KM#165, dated AH1240 (1824)

I originally set out to find the right hand coin, which I also think Afghan - but didn't find that one. It is partially dated AH12xx

Echizento, thanks for the welcome. They are really interesting coins to look at I hope you eventually find out what yours are!

Andyg, Thankyou so much for your ID on the first and more info on the second. They were older than I thought! It's great to learn more about these coins, but so hard when you can't read the language they were struck in!

I think I have found the other coin! It looks like an 1879 falus, KM#96.

See the numismaster photos at http://secure.numismaster.com/ta/fw...087242/4.jpg and http://secure.numismaster.com/ta/fw...087241/4.jpg. Many thanks for putting me on the right track!

It's been killing me trying to make out what the image is on the second coin. Now I see, it's a... chicken? Or peacock, more likely?

Numismaster and ngc (http://www.ngccoin.com/poplookup/Wo...coinid=92176) say peacock. Couldn't make it out myself until I saw a similar peacock whilst reading up on Afghan coins.

I think you found it - it's perhaps easier if you don't look at the coin upside down :) I couldn't get past the thought it was a flower of some sort.
Part of the problem, as is common with these, is it's overstruck on an earlier coin.
