Eng5858, That 1-punch is not defacing your KHD. There's no intent to commit fraud there. It's just someone with too much time on their hands. :)

If you ever searched a box of halves, you will see identifiable marks on them that people left so they know the box had been searched. I really don't know how well that worked. Now people dump them in coin machines and they get all mixed in with others that may have something good in them.

And it's not just with Halves. People mark all denominations for the same reasons.

Like Forrest Gump would say...Stupid is as Stupid does. Thats the only thing I can say about people who mark up coins and paper bills.

Got these as a gift this Christmas I don't know as to which is worse the stickers of Santa? Or The tape being used to hold the "coin treasures" in place!

I don't remember what initials I used to find in Sharpie on my halves, but would get runs of boxes with this incredibly ignorant practice.
While I don't condone Sharpie marking at all, it is not a fraction of the extreme stupidity, ignorance, and arrogance of someone that would spray paint entire batches.

I mark to see what I get back and in a year I have seen 10 or so come back. I do not mark but one type that is extremely common so I do not affect other types. I get some I would like to keep at times with other marks but usually it will come off if needed.
What I don't like is the RING..that has ruined far more coins for me..

The silver hunters are the culprits that are doing the marking. They don't care.

I stamp all my American change finds (all clad, obviously!) with an A and then release them, because I don't have much use for a bunch of American clad found roll hunting and holding onto it costs too much.

I live about 70 miles North of Birmingham Alabama... I've found several of those "J" half dollars. I suspected it was just some teenager playing games. The theory about a roll-hunter is much more plausable. Interesting that those coins are traveling...

At one time before the coin counting machines, and in the areas were they are casino's. It was common for teachers in grade schools and high school to have kids mark coins and dollar bills. To see if in a selected period of time, how the money would stay or travel out of the neighborhood.
Since in the metro Detroit area, the casino's drive the coinage supply to the banks. No more dollar coins available in mint rolls from the banks. Only what was used at the casino's. Granted the banks also didn't like getting stuck with the rolls of dead presidents, etc, neither do the armor car companies.
Of course the casino's would prefer that patrons use their tokens/debt type cards in the machines. Less handing/workers more profit with their debt cards.
The coins that are painted on one or both sides, and I imagine some operators with bills mark them. In the vending/arcade biz to check to see if they help is "helping themselves to coinage from the machines. Now a days some of the machines have lock money boxes that are swapped.
