The listing actually states it is a fake. I put in $4 because I wanted to start working on my "fake knowledge" and maybe share with Steve Caruso. But I was shocked that it went for $65.

The pictures are not great so you may not see that there are no lines in the III. I double checked the patterns for that year and there were no 3CN patterns.

Here is the title of the listing:

1878 Three Cent PIECE (NICKEL) PROOF PROBABLE FAKE

1878-3CN-Fake---Sold-For-$65!

1878-3CN-Fake---Sold-For-$65!

Did I miss an awesome steal or did the bidding just get carried away?

to be honest I don't know enough about this series in proof version to comment on this one. The design looks very close to me when looking at the small pictures though. If it doesn't have the lines in the roman numerals then that would be a design I don't remember seeing so I am guessing the seller was correct but as I said I know next to nothing about this series and very well could be wrong

I suspect that faking those to dupe a collector would be very difficult to do, especially since it's a Proof-only date. I'd love to see one though!

@Prethen - so you think it might have been real?

I think what Prethen is saying is that it would be very hard to make a fake one good enough to fool a collector of the series, but that if someone did he would love to see it. That one isn't good enough.

Gotcha! Until I can afford the years I am missing, I am actively looking for fakes (weird, I know!).
