I didnt want to spend any money but AncientNoob convinced me to pull the trigger on this one... Described as "Celtic Durotriges stater" the sellor provided no diameter or weight but said it is assumed that it is Spinks 367 (Billon) but is possibly the silver version. Spinks tells me that the Durotriges produced coins from mid 1st century BC to mid 1st century AD other examples of this coin date it as 54--45 BC. Weights of the other examples claiming to be silver vary wildly from 3.2g to 6g I bought this coin at a fair price for billon and if it turns out silver then I got a steal. At the time they were producing these coins in silver the Romans invaded Gaul which put a stop to English trade with Gaul and consequently put silver in short supply, hence them degrading the metal. When I get a chance I will take it to a friend who has pawnbrokers weighing scales and I will try to get a weight both in air and in water... then maybe someone can compute from these numbers what material it is. Anyway :) thats another coin crossed off my to-get list :) Edited by DavidUK 11/27/2012 3:53 pm

^^ Cool do you have a size and weight for yours? Also have you established if yours is silver or billon? This information might help me confirm what I have...

I will dig it out and weigh and measure now. It was bought as billon 20 years ago but sold with the caveat (or ploy) that it might be silver. Martin

Thanks :)
Looking at the colour of the metal I would give mine 50% chance, after all silver oxidizes and goes dark and the photo looks like the coin is toning. Either way I am sure I will be happy with it...I would just like to know :)
If its size and weight matches your one though then I will presume the worst.

Quote: but AncientNoob convinced me to pull the trigger on this one.. Does this argument work with the spousal unit? I tried using x6 as an excuse, but that failed miserably. She said I could go live in the wilds of Manitoba if that's what I wanted. Hmmm..... Anyway, interesting Celtic coin. I'll be watching for the updates.

I like the abstraction of Celtic coins--that's in really nice condition!

I have looked for the coins for an hour or more now and cannot find it. I will have another look tomorrow. I have come to the conclusion that I simply have too many coins for me to manage sensibly and I will have to significantly cut down on them somehow.
I found a tray with 75 coins in that I had put away some time ago and forgotten where I had put them....
Sorry for the delay.
Martin

No problem Martin... but maybe its time for a serious re-organisation... no hurry on that info anyway since I have not got the coin in hand yet. As long as you are quicker than the postman I will be happy :)

From my experience, billon staters of the Durotriges seem to be easiest to obtain of the the Celtic Britain series, and the most reasonably priced. For this reason, they make the best 'toe in the water' first purchase.

I am curious what the obverse and reverse images are supposed to be. Very often Celtic coins are not just meaningless random shapes but actually a well orchestrated abstract rendition of popular prototype coins. This may or may not be the case for this piece but I think it might be worth looking into. Again congrats on acquiring this piece.
