Well I love these coins and this one was another save...Im sure it was headed to the melting pot. Got it for a great price and have recently just finished restoring it..Took better than 60 hours of love but I think It looks great ...what do you all think... before and after..

for the record it was not laquer on the coin ...I think it was the beginning of bad news...Some one was trying to scratch it off so there was some hairlines but I did the best I could with what I know....

DBM it looked like someone dumped a rust bucket on it.The coin was trashed with what I think was heavy oxidation... Better to have it looked cleaned for now as it will retone in time,,,Than to let it get damaged any further you think ? at least I do...

before the final after .. I had my wife upload the pics and she put the wrong set thats why I pulled it off. Plus in the final pic It clearly states the coin was restored....So ...If I relist it will be with the heading of restored and the before and after pics will be together so any potential buyer will be aware....I think this is the proper way to do it....

Where did you get the $1200 valuation for this?
The referance I have puts it at $500 for EF40, As this is "Cleaned" that should automaticaly drop it a couple of grades to VF20 at $311.
Personaly I would have left the coin as found

The valuation come from the CCN trends and in no way will the value drop 2 grade points..Try and tell that to any dealer who has ICCS coins that say Harshly cleaned or corrosion..They will drop maybe 5 to 10 % off the value...As for me I am a collector and sell off the coins I no longer need or want in order to fund my next coin.....And as for price have a look at my listings and try an offer you might be very surprised...

I would have left that guy alone. DO you think in 10 years after some oxidation you will still be able to tell that is was cleaned?

Thanks AZ....It was too bad to have just left it...Im sure that in a few years if left alone to re tone you will not be able to tell. I was told by some collectors older than me if you leave a coin in a ceramic dish in a temperate area it will re tone very naturally and hide any evidence of cleaning? Never had the chane to really test it..But I have seen coins tone over the years so I guess it would work..

Sure glad my Victorian halfs are safe, if you saw mine you might wanna restore em all. I'm sorry artdio but I cannot say nice cleaning job. It may not have been the nicest half but it was original. I prefer original coins and won't even consider purchasing a cleaned coin.

Art ... nice VF (cleaned) half you have there and very nice restorative work ! Sure looks a great deal better than the original pix.In my opinion it is now somewhat more saleable. To all out there this is the same sort of thing that NGC does with their NCS program and is perfectly acceptable. Good work ART! Current VF 20 CCN trends at $550.

Sorry wireman but I would never clean a nice coin ..But this begged to be saved..Original or not the damage was severe and would have only gotten worse..This way it will be around for a long time.. You should see my collection ..You would like it.. Now I will ask would you have purchased this 1898 in the condition it was in ? Probably not as like most you would have seen only a heavily oxidized coin that looked like poo...
