I was recently offered a 1798 small eagle bust dollar for $1000. The pictures of the coin can be seen here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1798-DRAPED...221118383452My question is.....do you think this seller is a crook, or was he duped when he got it and really is just ignorant?

So he bought the coin for 1200 and is now trying to sell it to you for 1000?

Truth? He's ignorant, not malicious. Just because your heart is in the right place does not mean your brain is. I've no doubt you passed on it; your previous posts pretty much define you as a knowledgeable collector. This isn't the first, nor will it be the last, Ebayer who is in over his head.

Oh. My. God. One of the prettiest fakes I've seen. The position of star 1 to the curls is wrong for the only 15-star small eagle dollar, BB-81 B-2, but not much else wrong. Of course, however good or bad a fake, the vendor can always claim to be an innocent victim.

It's likely a fake. The piece exhibits VF+ detail and would be worth $3,000 to $4,000 even with problems. Problem-free, these are $7,000 coins in that condition.
The reverse looks like a Chinese copy. Only 10,000 of these were minted (15 stars) with about 500 known today.

Actually, the person that bought the coin for $1200 on ebay, returned the coin after he discovered it was a fake. The easiest way to tell this coin is a fake is from the off-centering of the bust. If the coin had the date 1795 on it, it would have been a more convincing fake. There is no such animal as an off-centered 1798 bust dollar. I must admit, it is the 1st 1798 off-centered fake I have ever seen.

After looking at other coins that this guy's sold, I am now convinced he is a crook. I am certainly no expert on Lincoln cents, but, the 1922 cent in his listing: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1922-PLAIN-...221134980877is the worst altered date I've seen. the last 2 is comical. No wonder the buyer sent it back.

This is also my first seeing the off center bust on a 1798 fake. I have seen a few fake 1796 dollars with the off center bust.

I didn't even notice the off center bust. The reverse "UNITED" relative to the wreath and bow looked off to me.

That 1922 penny does look off because of that last "2" in it.

BIG time fake! Look at the softness, lettering especially, as compared to an authentic coin. Quote: That 1922 penny does look off because of that last "2" in it.
The "2" is hilarious. How bout this...just avoid this seller all together. Just another scamster on the bay. Reported.

So, he sold it for $1200, it was returned to him as fake, and he offered it to you for $1000? Please, what was his sales pitch! I'm dying to know!

He contacted me through the ebay system with just the pics of the coin (no mention of prior ebay sale/return). I researched and found the coin in his listing and saw in his feedback about the return of the coin.

Definitely a fake. He may have bought it thinking it was good and found out otherwise. Then decided to dump on ebay.

I notice that his last sale ended on the 17th and he does not have anything else running on ebay now. Hopefully, he gave up on ebay. I think he's knowingly offering a fake to you, though.
