Indian Head Cent / IHC Pile Sorted, Yay!

ThisIsFun Pillar of the Community United States 2480 Posts	Posted 12/02/2012 2:33 pm Whew, I'm coming up from the rabbit hole after sorting for the last 8 hours. After sorting by date, I did a speed-round of rough grading, focusing on the headband/Liberty/hair. Here are the stats, and these numbers include the 7 IHCs I posted yesterday. These were most likely all pulled from my grandad's cash register from the 1930s-1970, although he may have taken some in trade. None were in their own display or otherwise protected, including the 7 posted yesterday. Total number: 860 (only 13 with unreadable dates) Date range: 1862-1909; all dates from 1878 on; only 6 earlier dates. Likely AU or better: 25 No key dates or unusually rare coins found, but 7 of the 1886's are type 2 (including one which is going to grade AU or better). No mintmarked 1908's or 1907's. No doublestrikes, overstruck dates, or other errors found so far but I haven't examined each with that degree of detail. There are a large number of very high quality 1888's, 7 that are likely to be at least AU (similar to the 1888 I posted yesterday). 3 more will be EF. In the following dates I found at least one coin which will likely grade out as AU or higher (includes ones posted yesterday): 1868 1873 1876 1878 1879 1883 1886 type I 1886 type II 1887 1888 (7!) 1889 (3) 1890 1900 1901 1906 (2) 1908 Wowza! I'm going to take a break for a few hours and then photograph at least a few of these. One or two had a bit of verdigris in the area and I may take a closer look if I can safely remove it. Even with magnification it's hard to see well on less than Au coins, so I may take a quick picture of all of that year just to check the 8. Macro lens, much easier to assess. DVCollector Bedrock of the Community United States 10045 Posts	Posted 12/02/2012 3:49 pm The 1888/7 Snow-1 should also have a rim Cud near "UNITED". There's also another interesting variety for 1888--a repunched date with an MPD near the necklace of Liberty. Report this Post to the Staff

I think they've been culled over the years, not expecting to find super quality coins in most of the piles. I've sorted them by type already and did a quick check for anything obviously more valuable... not much. But I haven't devoted much time to the Barbers and Liberties yet. Thousands of Mercs to sort as well-- again, not expecting to find the key dates for those and they are almost all well-circulated. Report this Post to the Staff

I'm almost finished cropping/sizing pics of the rest of the IHCs which looked the best. Hard to really tell until I see the pictures... I need a stronger magnifying glass. Some of the coins I thought were high AU or better may not be. Still nice though. Report this Post to the Staff

I don't think any of them are quite as nice as those I posted yesterday but there are some items of interest and I have questions about the terminology for certain findings. And as before, I appreciate grading input so that I can learn. One of many things I don't get is the criteria for RedBrown.
