We all know that particular series come into favor and fall out of favor over time, only to rebound yet again at a later date. From what I've been reading, it seems that all US series have been rapidly appreciating over the past few years. So...which series has been the laggard? Where are the best buys? (And which series are overheated and due for a pull-back and resting phase?)

As I am starting to complete the 2 Cent series, I really think they are under valued. I agree with amac44 on the Peace dollars and Barber dimes, quarters and halfs as well

you guys are saying the Peace dollars and Barber series are over rated and people tend to pay too much for them? Or they are under rated and should be worth more?

I started the thread...but have been out of active collecting for 20+ years, so I really don't know the current market very well. I do know "experts" back in the late 70's/early 80's would say that nickels were "under collected"...just not a lot of interest in them (any of the series) relative to penneys or silver coins. Buffs were the most popular of the nickel series...and that is likely still true.

Lincoln (esp. the wheaties) were popular because that's what every kid started with in the post WWII years, and that was the series they would most likely pay big money to complete. That may still be true today?

Gold was for the elite collector. The spot price for gold drove prices for even common date coins into the stratosphere, and rare dates/mints were even higher!

Mercs were popular for much the same reason as Lincoln wheat cents.

But all that was way back when...

I only want one of everything ever minted by the US, oh yeah, in MS condition! But it looks like I will have to start with the Peace dollars. The dollar size coins appeal to me and I think they are a good buy, even some Morgan's too. Haven't looked at the Barber series, they are great coins so I would think that they should do well in the future. I don't know why I but I hve a hunch that the Susan B. Anthony dollars in MS might be something as a small series down the road, it was so short lived, but I am not basing that on any empirical evidence, just "gut" reaction.

Franklins, and Roosevelts feel are a little under rated. WAIT! I know! The Washington Dollars are the most underrated of them all!

I think Franklins are the most underrated.... the mintage numbers are relatively low and they are inexpensive. I put Peace dollars at the 2nd most underrated.

I seriously think proof coins of ALL series that are minted before 1950s are seriously underrated. Sometimes when I hear the prices of proof coins, it just makes me wonder if they are rather low at times. Well of course proof GOLD coins are always expensive as ever before though.

I think that mint sets will be a wise investment as so many have been broken up. I also am guilty of this but have refrained as best I can lately

I think the US Pre-modern commemrative coin are way undervalue, mainy because of price and mintage.
Also like other have said I could see the Barber seriers in all denomintaion taken off.

19th century coins in general seem under priced in relation to their availability. The only exception are Morgan's as they are always in demand.
