I'm a bit stumped with this 1965-P Kennedy half dollar, found in a bank roll today...maybe I'm just not used to the 65's, and/or, SMS issues of this year, but, the overall look is just like the silver 64's, as far as luster, and, overall "look", yet, the weight is within range, at about 11.62 grams...a super-rare true silver 1965 should weigh 12.50 grams.....perhaps the copper core was hidden while minting, or? 2nd pic shows the 1965 at far right, sticks out like a sore thumb! 3rd pic shows with a BU 1971, to compare luster. Opinions welcomed...

I've noticed some 40% silver Kennedy halves with very little copper showing at the edge but yours is beyond anything I've seen. Do you think you should weight it again? Bob

Weighed 5 times...came out at 11.61...11.62 each time..pretty accurate digital scale, within 0.01 grams...can someone please post an edge (rim), picture of similar 1965 KHD, so we can compare, so I can see the 80/20 look of a normal coin?...those(lucky enough) with rolls, I'd be curious to a look at that..will help a lot seeing 10 or 20 of these edge-to-edge for comparison. Here's an updated pic, now that I found a 1967 to compare with..as you can see, the 1967 shows normal demarcation lines in reeds for the 80/20 silver/copper alloy...the 1965 still appears to not have these...I don't think it's 90% silver, but, I am still stumped why this phenonmenon. Ty Cal

I'm sending it to Dr. James Wiles in Jan., 2013, as it is a EDS coin, with an awesome tripe doubled die...there are 7 listed DDO's for 1965, on the CONECA Files..my hunch is this is a toning issue, and not much more than that N.J.Bob....16 rolls of KHD's, and 2-80% Ag, and a DDO to boot, not bad for what the irritated bank teller told me were "searched by the family" rolls....teller asked me what I was doing...rather than say, "Hunting for Silver", I told him I look for BU KHD's for my albums, and errors, which is the truth...my other Bank, where I DO have an account sheepishly told me last week a bunch of 1910 silver was intercepted by her co-worker...why she had to tell me, I don't know...no biggie...some days you get lucky, other days, you don't...it's all about the hunt, for me! Happy Hunting! Cal

It's a 40% silver. In picture 2 I clearly see the layer separation. It just hasn't had the handling that would cause the 80% copper core to start to darken. The weight is no where close to what it would have to be for 90% silver.

I have seen dozens of these that look the exact same. Good practice though to weigh every 40%'er. There are 90% out there in the 40% years.

Ya cool coin. 90% half weight is 12.5g so the '64 and earlier would have that weight.

I too see the 'layer' in it, I have seen some of these in the past. I have also seen the reverse in that in looking I did not immediately see it was silver until I saw the date and then looked back and saw what I should have the first time. Still Cool coin.
