Hopefully this is the right topic area but mods please move if not. This was an 1892 South African Shilling - has anybody seen this before or have any info on who may have done it - personally I think it's great Thanks Moved to Exonumia forum - Sap

That's very interesting and certainly well done! I've never seen anything like that before and wonder if there are more out there like it.

As BLadd said "well done' and probably quite a few years back but I'd much rather have the original.

Nice. There are in fact two things going on here. The carving of the coin is still practised. Look for, Hobo Nickels on this site or Google. The cutting out is also still practised by many, including CCF member nohope587. See: https://goccf.com/t/132669Paul Kruger or Uncle Paul (Oom Paul in Afrikaans) was often carved and cut upon and you can find a fair few examples, but they will all be different.

I've seen similar. It is sometimes sub-grouped under "Trench Art". And CCF's NoHope has put some interesting pieces on display here on CCF.
I don't approve of vandalizing coins, but I do appreciate "Art", although I realize that it's a fine line ...

Here is a guy in Western Germany who has already made lots of those "carved" coins: http://www.muenzenschneider.de/ If you click on "Münzenauswahl", you'll get a menu with lots of countries. Select one and view the pieces. Yes, I prefer "intact" coins too, but some of these are very nicely done ... Christian

I've also got a few pieces that have been cut into jigsaw puzzles. I have about 5-6 including a large Russian coin that's been cut into a 26 piece puzzle.

ZAR coins are often found engraved with all sorts of patterns on them. They're considered "trenchart" and can be found with both pro-Kruger and anti-Kruger symbolism; they were presumably made by soldiers and POWs on both sides of the Boer War. The addition of a hat and pipe was a common anti-Kruger engraving. This website is run by a keen collector of South African numismatics and illustrates numerous kinds of trenchart ZAR coins. You'll also see, down the bottom of that website, a piece almost identical to yours though in better condition was sold on ebay in 2009 for £127. So as you can see, to the right people, such pieces are worth much more than mere "damaged coins".
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
