Just a thread to show off this overlooked (IMO) area of ancients collecting. If you have any coins of Valentinian III, Johannes, Leo, Zeno, etc or anything from the Germanic kingdoms (even imitatives) feel free to post them ! I'll start with mine: In chronological order: RomanHonorius (I only included this one because this particular type was minted later in his reign, between 410-423 AD; it seems this was the time that the bronze coinage started to quickly decline in quality, and setting the standard for the rest of the century). Rev: VICTORIA AVGG, Victory walking left, Rome mint Theodosius II#1) Rev: Victory facing, holding two wreaths, Heraclea mint(?) #2) Rev: Cross within wreath, Nicomedia mint MarcianRev: Monogram of Marcian, Constantinople mint Leo I#1) Rev: Lion reverse, Constantinople mint #2) Rev: Verina standing, holding globe with cross and scepter, Constantinople mint #3) Rev: Emperor dragging captive, Nicomedia mint ZenoRev: Monogram of Zeno, Thessalonika mint Germanic - Vandal KingdomUnknown ruler (possibly a generic bust on obv)Rev: Palm tree, North African mint Rev: Palm tree, North African mint (in hand I think I can see a barbarian mustache on the bust!) HunericRev: Bar over N with IIII below, Carthage mint Edited by VisigothKing 12/10/2012 02:18 am

I have coins of several emperors that ruled in the 5th century, but all of the coins I have of them were minted before 400 A.D. Guess I need to fix that problem at some point.

Well, this could be a very tenuous link Jango but I'll give it a go with the aid of a bit of info from a British perspective. The last known Roman currency importation into Britain was around 400AD, the true 'Romans' had all but gone at this point, all that remained were Romanised Britains and Anglicised Romans all calling the place home. Cultural people in their own right due to the separation from the rest of the Empire that the English Channel gave them and a strange mix of old and imported cultures. Ahead of them lay uncertain times and what we now call the dark ages. Not an awful lot is known about the next 150 years of British history. It is clear that some British people migrated to the continent, which resulted in the region of Armorica in northwest Gaul becoming known as Brittany. There is also evidence of British migration to Spain. In Britain towns continued to function, although the military had pulled out, the Romano-British civilian administration remained intact. There would certainly have been shortages brought about by the gradual reduction of trade with Europe, especially in those luxury goods for which the Romano-British elite had developed a taste. However, trade continued, albeit much curtailed from previous centuries. One of the theories as to why so many barbarous coins are found in Britain is that long after the Romans left the locals continued to copy old Roman coins, then copy the copies etc. I'm inclined to agree with this theory, it makes sense. Real Roman coinage was no longer getting here but the population trusted Roman looking coins, even though many locals didn't understand Latin they still wanted coins that looked Roman, others may disagree but I feel these 'barbs' were used from the late 3rd Century until the 5th or 6th. All that being said I can now probably squeeze a possibly 5th century barbarous coin into this thread On another note I've always wanted a Ricimer: http://www.princeton.edu/~achaney/t...Ricimer.html

I really don't know when a lot of these coins were minted, but these rulers had part of their rule into the 5th century. Arcadius Honorius Honorius Theodosius II That's all I have right now. I haven't gotten around to purchasing other late Roman coins yet.

Forgot I had this! These were made between 395-401AD. Arcadius from Antioch with a nice red/orange patina.

Great coins guys! Quote: One of the theories as to why so many barbarous coins are found in Britain is that long after the Romans left the locals continued to copy old Roman coins, then copy the copies etc. Reminds me of the practice they did in Anglo-Saxon Britain where they would clip siliquae down to the size of their own coins. Also makes me wonder how long into the post-Roman period that Roman coins were still in circulation. Would a 6th century Roman in the Ostrogothic Kingdom for example have used coins of Constantine, Claudius II, or even of earlier emperors? They made so many 4th century bronzes so I figure there's a good chance of that. Maybe hoard evidence has already shown proof of this? I'm bending the rules a little btw. If you don't have any of the scarcer 5th century coins or Germanic ones then go ahead and post anything from the 390s-early 400s. Quote: I gonna go looking for some Vandal Kingdom coins! That's the spirit!

Well, the Beau Street Hoard had a Marc Antony silver coin in it. You also find roman coins modified by Brits and stapled onto rings and things.
I have a Theodosius votive, perhaps listed as scarce! Need to clean up the mint mark, but ill post it later.
