Hi All,

Everything I know about this coin says that this one

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1930-AUSTRA...em3a7c917521

is real.

Am I right or wrong? (not that I can afford that price )

This proves that your just starting out with coins....
The good thing is that you asked the question.

The 1930 Australian penny is one of the most sought after coins in the world.
Rarity, value, shear appeal all make this coin the "holy grail" of Australian coins.

Mind you, you'll have to put up maybe 1...2 houses to get a good one.

The thing with this coin, and in fact many high value coins, is that they have been counterfeited a LOT.

That is why I ask the question. I'm thinking real but ebay?

Peter

I don't see why all the fuss about the 1930 Penny Type-1 - there's a couple of thousand of them out there.

Much more special is the 1930 Penny Type-2 -

Ok Peter

Are you pulling my leg?

I can find no reference to a "type 2" 1930 penny.

Based on Stevo1962 and Appleangel07's verification that this is the real deal.

That raises a question, Why would you sell something like this on ebay?

Surely you'd be better off in an "official" auction.

Got me stumped.

Oh, and now I'm really disappointed that I can't afford this one. I still need a 30 for my set.

I saw a coin of this quality sell for $27000 at Nobles
in Sydney last year and there would be a wider audience on ebay so maybe he's just seeing what is out there by starting high and hoping for a reasonable offer

Hi Peter Thomas

What a lovely "one of a kind" 1930 (Type 2) "roo" penny.
"Made in China" on the obverse perhaps ?

I agree completely with stevo, spare cash, buy it & see how you go. Considering those PMD notes that I saw the other day both sold at ridiculous prices, then anything is possible!

This colour can be caused by using a bright yellow light and an improperly configured white balance. It's often done to make buyers believe a coin has genuine mint red but they end up making the coin look cleaned.

Looking at some of the other items this seller has, I'd imagine it's purely the yellow glow from a light bulb and it's night time when the pic was taken (hence the bulb being the only light).

I'd hardly imagine you'd purposely try to add yellow to a florin. (see below)

Genuine for sure. It's such a shame that items like this are treated with such suspicion on ebay. A bit overpriced for sure. If it was mine it would be free postage and I would pay for extra insurance out of my own pocket as the profit margin would be quite healthy. If I had the cash I would buy it as I know that if it was fake there is no doubt I would get my money back anyway.
