I find about 30-40 Canadian pennies per bag. What are the key dates for Canada? I have scoured the site and found nothing.

I wish I knew more about canadian coins as well. Isn't there something with pennies in the 2000's that are magnetic and non-magnetic?

That's right -- starting in 2002 through to 2012 the Canadian mint put out magnetic and non-magnetic pennies every year for circulation, with the exception of 2008 when they did not mint any non-magnetic ones at all. In 1999 and 2001 they put out magnetic ones in some of the mint sets, and in 2000 there were apparently about 8 magnetic examples that escaped the mint, but those ones are worth a small fortune. From 1999 to 2006 the magnetic ones had a small "P" below the queen's bust, and the non-magnetic ones had nothing there at all. Partway through 2006 they stopped putting the "P" there, and instead replaced it with the mint's logo -- but only on some of the cents. By 2007 they were putting the logo on all the coins and it's stayed that way ever since. As well, the 2010 magnetics were issued as proof-like only, and they can be worth $25 and up. There are also rare varieties of several of the above pennies, though odds are mighty slim that you would run across one roll-hunting (but on the other hand, who knows? Maybe you might make that lucky score!)

There are 6 varieties of the 2006 -- they issued pennies magnetic and non-magnetic, each type with either a "P", the RCM logo, or nothing at all below the bust of the queen. There are less than 100 known of the 2006p non-magnetic variety, all of those in very high grade, but the other 5 you should be able to pick up a few examples. The 2006 magnetic (no "P" & no logo) could be tough, but at least they're out there.

Hope this helps!

I've never found a 2006 P period. Are they in circulation or just mint sets...?

Hi Double J

Yes, there are 2006P pennies in circulation, but only the magnetic ones. You can pick up almost all of the other 2006 varieties in change or roll hunting too, but you won't find the 2006P non-magnetic one. There are so few of those I don't how they left the mint -- I think in mint sets, but I could be mistaken.

Thanks pennysaver, I still can't believe I haven't found any 2006P magnetic or otherwise. I even have found more than one 2006 magnetic with no mark and not one 2006p...very odd...
