1908s Indian Heads! So I was reading posts about people giving their spouse coins for Christmas. So I decided to finish my Indian Head collection ( except for 1877) and put it in a new album after I used Verdicare to make them look better.
My hope was that husband would get interested in coins especially after I told him how I got most of the coins. Before I was interested in coin collecting, I was stacking silver. The "gold buyer shop" I went to for bulk silver had 4 books of penny collections for $15. I bought these and found one book was I. heads with two s mint mark coins!! Yahoo....until today!
So I used Verdicare on the coins and they are no longer s mints! I checked all the coins and none have the s mint mark.
Now I have a different story to tell! My guess is someone added the s mint mark to the two coins...
The good part of this story is those two coins got me into coin collecting. I'm thinking they may not have same effect on my husband! Oh well. I'll still put them in the album and give them to him. Maybe magic will happen and they'll grow back their s mint marks.

Hello Kelly. That is an interesting, but sad Christmas story. But, maybe it will turn into a wonderful Christmas story if your husband finds the hobby as cool as you do. Best of luck.

I think he will be fine with them, in the end it's the thought that counts. Hopefully it will spark him into collecting as well.

Thanks. I told him the story when he got home from work. I asked him if he wanted the coins "ASIs" or with the now missing $600-$700, he said he was fine with them" as is" but thinks Bad Thad ( the creator of Verdicare) owes the $600. He was just joking, of course.
I did tell him about the history represented in that album. The 1856 is 100 years before his birth year. Then all of the rest of us: me, the kids and grandkids , are all in there too if you add 100 years. Plus, the civil war, Lincoln's assignation, the build up to World War One. He likes the history... Has not seen coins yet... He'll get them closer to Christmas.

Sad story kellyk - but better you find out now than when/if you ever went to sell them.

Earle42... I know. What if .I had sold them to someone for big bucks and then found out they were fake? Or if I had passed them on to my kids. This way, I lost what I never really had in the 1st place.
I still believe I'm God's favorite kid and that I'm rich beyond measure. I'm relatively health, very happy and have lots of loved ones and great friends. Plus the experience taught me a lot about fake coins and I'll be careful when I do buy some rare, speedy coins. All in all, I got a great lesson for a little cash!

I think I have some V nickels that had a fake S mintmark because it is weird how they have these marks right where they were. |

Buddycat, on the 1908 you can still see a bit of the s. I initially thought it was still there as it is visible if I hold it one way to light. But it isn't visible any other way and the amount of wear is not compatible to rest of coin. So I know what you mean...
