I believe that it is struck through cloth, although grease or PMD are both distinct posibilities.

That's cool! It isn't wear so maybe a Grease Filled Die? (I never heard of a Grease Filled Die before a couple of days ago here at the forum but I like it and I'm going to use every chance I get. )

First thought was worn down. But since its a zinc cent ( I weighed it to confirm) it is pretty bazaar.

DrDon.
I noticed the weave like indents one the whole side... The dent could have been caused by a part of the design or a fold in the cloth

Struck Through Grease IMO........how does a fabric get in the minting process....I'm probably uninformed in the process..but I don't think cloth is included....

Imo, it's just too severe and covers every part of the die to be grease. Add to the equation--the very distinct texture to the surface. It's struck through something, but that's just a guess!

Struck through errors can literally be caused by almost anything. Being struck through cloth is one of the more common ones (not counting grease). Some others include grease, string, hair, plastic, bandaid, staples, etc. I've seen a coin that was struck through the feeder fingers before. :D As for your coin, it was definitely struck through something. In my opinion, it doesn't look like any Struck Through Grease I have seen, the indent on the face is puzzling. I've never seen a Lincoln Cent that had his face indented by being Struck Through Grease. I hope someone more knowledgeable can shed some light on this coin, definitely a keeper. :) EDIT: What DVCollector said. Too much of the design is gone for it to be grease. Usually the design in the center of the coin remains unscathed if it was Struck Through Grease. DOUBLE EDIT: Upon looking at the coin closer, I almost definitely think it was struck through either cloth or plastic. The lines on the coin are perfectly straight and where there are lines that go a different direction (above the date) they are perfectly perpendicular with the other lines. Also, I think the indent on the face could have been caused by the cloth/plastic having a fold in it. No way grease would make an indent so perfectly straight and equal in width.

What Indian1 said. I forgot to mention that I also saw signs of machine/strike doubling on the forehead and also a little bit on the the date as well.
