And who would bid on a 'slabbed' coin without seeing the reverse?

The odd part is the high bidder placed four more bids after becoming the high bidder.

I don't think the seller has any idea of what he is selling. I just checked all his listings. The only other coins is a set of Presidential dollars. All the rest is electronics, watches, & tools. Someone that knows nothing about coins

I just reported it. This has to be removed. The bidders are just ignorant and have no real knowledge in Numismatics (or haven't bothered to educate themselves). As far as this basement slabber, could be the seller.

That is too bad the people bidding can't tell that this coin is altered.

Does this date really look altered? With a dark enough pic, and a worn enough coin, and a big enough buyers' market of people who buy the slab and not the coin, I don't think you need to bother to alter the 5 to have this scam succeed.

Not a basement slabber, this was at least a somewhat legitimate service back when it was in operation. It ran far about three years back around 2000 to 2003. Still how could you miss this one? To me the 5 looks like a 5, and how did they miss the fact that it was significantly underweight for a 93 and that the lettered edge was missing? (The S-78 was struck in 1796 on plain edge planchets that weighed about 25% less than the old lettered edge planchets. They are lighter and noticeably thinner. Kind of like the difference between a CN Indian Head cent and bronze one, ignoring the color.)
