At one time a dollar coin was actual silver. Then we went to a dollar bill backed by silver. Then to a dollar bill back by "the full faith of the US government."
I wonder how much of resistance is due to the fact that the govt is proposing going back to a coin, but this time it is backed with "the full faith of the US government."

It is my understanding that we have often had paper currency in our nation, even back to the "Continental Currency" that was not backed. The Silver Certificates had more to do with silver mining interests than anything else. No one wants (or wanted) a dollar coin. Not then. Not now. But I do agree with with the camp that says just do it. Since we seem to need to save money in govt, why not. BTW - I also say just do it in regards to the metric system, so I guess I'm a real wild card. :-)

I think that the reason that most collectors, like myself, do not like edge marking is because of our tired old eyes needing a magnifying lens to make out the year and mint mark.
The way that I solved that was to strip the coins out of mint sets in mintmark order.
Just call be squinty..............

"There has been a lot of buzz lately about the dollar note being replaced with a dollar coin."
That buzz has been going on for about 30 years. It'll never happen because our lawmakers are too afraid to make this change. And the American public doesn't think it wants it.
Of course, if we had some politicians who did the right thing and didn't care about public opinion, then we'd have the dollar bill phased out in a week. People would complain but eventually they'd get used to it--because they'd have to--and all would be right with the world.

As for the edge lettering, you can't see it if the coins are in holders or albums. Terrible, terrible idea.

Quote: As for the edge lettering, you can't see it if the coins are in holders or albums This is the reason why I am only collecting the Presidential dollar in proof (a date set). The date is easy to figure out based on which president in on the coin, but the mint can only be determined by the edge. Not cool.

I don't think the average American cares what their coins look like. As long as they don't irritate them, they pay no attention to them.

i love the Presidential dollars but i'll agree the edge lettering was an idea that didnt work out that well. I would put the mintmark and date somewhere on the obverse.

I also like the Presidential dollars but I like the Native American dollars more. I like the idea of 1 different reverse each year. But it is dumb to have both at the same time. One of them should have been a 2 dollar coin. Wouldn't that be an interesting thought. I also think the date and mintmark on the edge is the worst idea the mint ever came up with. It is very hard to see them in the proof sets also. Oh well. When was the last time the government did something right anyway? But the optimist in me still thinks they will do away with the dollar bill soon. Maybe by the end of 2013?

Oh and when you spend the dollar coins to get them circulating, don't forget to record how much you spent in the Project $100k thread. We need all the help we can get.

I thought I would add a little experience of my own to this thread... I lived in Ecuador (where they use United States currency, including the Sacagawea dollar) for a year. There I almost always had a dollar coin in my pocket or on the dresser to be used when I went back out. I had liked the coins beforehand, but fell in love with them after using them every day. They wear and tarnish very well and never became annoying by being too heavy for my pocket. I even brought home a big handful of the coins I thought had interesting wears and tarnishes. In Ecuador, they are great too because cash gets used and abused leaving paper money with a very short lifespan (especially the one dollar bill).

P.S. I agree with many of you...
Down with the edge lettering and $1 instead of One Dollar!

My biggest complaint is the $1 instead of One Dollar. I'm fine with the designs (how interesting can you make a portrait of a dead president?) and the edge lettering. I like the coins for their size and usefulness, not necessarily for their design. I collect and spend all of them. Presidents, Sacs, SBA's, Native Americans and even the occasional IKE although those aren't as convenient.
