I know coin collecting,,,,, has such a HUGE range. I mean we have different time periods... just in US coins. NOT to mention world coins, I mean WOW.

then, you have vintage, older coins from different time periods. I mean the list goes on and on. I remember going into a coin shop, back in the day when many also sold baseball cards and more on the other side of the shop... and as an example, I bought a few Mercury dimes.. I thought they looked so neat.

but then.......... in the corner display, the coin shop has American silver eagles. I looked at it. picked it up.... and that was it I was hooked on the size, the heft and design of the coin. I really really REALLY like that eagle...

... BUT,, then, very shortly after that coin shop visit, I went to my local bank. and man... in the main lobby in the center in a nice glass display, they had PROOF eagles in gold. wow.... I asked to see one and I was,, that was it. I enjoyed the beauty of the proof finish.

more time went by, and I soon discovered world silver 1 oz coins. I appreciated the fact that I could learn about a country and educate myself by owning a coin.... and what better way than by owning a piece of their country, an extension via owning a world bullion or proof coin.

and that's why, and how I got stuck on collecting just proofs and BU silver and gold coins.....

...and there's no shame in that, at all.

Collect what you like and can afford, and don't let anyone tell you "you're doing it wrong" or "you should collect [these other things] instead". I've found that, most of the time, the people saying such things are either (a) coin dealers who want to sell you the stuff they happen to have in stock, or (b) people who already own a hoard of [these other things] and are hoping to bump up collector demand so they can sell their hoard for a profit later.

It's your passion, so pursue what you're passionate about. The surest way to ruin your enjoyment of this hobby is to try to grit your teeth and smile while collecting things you really don't like or want.

My own passion about coins is their history, which is why I personally don't buy too many modern bullion and proof coins. They simply don't have much history, yet. I'm sure collectors like me in 2000 years time will feel quite differently about them.

yes I agree 100% you gotta collect what interests you, what perks your interest... otherwise it will get dull and boring and you leave.

I collect silver and gold coins from 1900-1920. I have been asked countless times, "why?" . All I say is "because". I like the time period, and it interests me. Collect anything you want, and most of all, have fun!

Sounds like me....started collecting old coins because of the history, then proofs because they are just beautiful, and now I am really into bullion.

i agree with you guys. and the other things is too, that you know just because I enjoy gold and silver proofs and bullion, it doesn't mean I don't appreciate the other eras and types of coins, doesn't make me one of those snobbish hobbyists.

If you do not collect what you like, but what others tell you to collect, then you are doing it wrong.
