This scarce ten cent piece is one of my favorite coins and ranks high in my Newfoundland set. A dot to the right and left of 'Newfoundland' identifies this as the elusive Obverse 1 variety. The worn reverse, typical of this issue, has survived better than many. Aside from a weak braid, which I have a feeling was faint initially, the obverse offers respectable detail.

How would you grade her? Perhaps you have an 1870 of your own to share. Thanks for looking.

I have owned many of the 1870's and I have seen much worse rev. side's grade VG 10 with ICCS ..Based on all the ones I have had I would have no doubt calling it F12 to F15 for sure..... Nice find..... There are some real nice Newf. halfs for sale on ebay right now...You should check the 1873 and 1880

The last 2 I had graded by ICCS the 10 was 90 % gone the ENT was not there and the date was barely visible,,The obv Ok was like this one ....and they were both VG 10 ... For some reason this date was a bad run ..Most of them are very weak in the rev centers..? not sure why maybe bad dyes

VG8. But don't fret as this coin is notoriously hard to find in a grade above fine and in my opinion this is rarer than any of the 1873 5 cents. I would take a nice ef40 of this any day over an 1873h EF
