Hello I am a newbie to coins and this forum and I had a question about two Morgan dollars that I found some years back. The first coin is a 1894 Morgan dollar coin and it looks like it was minted in Philadelphia. The second coin is a 1879 Morgan dollar coin and it looks to have a S on the back so I assume it was minted in San Francisco? I been looking these coins up online and can't figure out the worth of them. I wanted to see if someone could help me of point me into the right direction. I have attached some pics of the coins. Thanks in advanced Edited by Jonesh529 12/23/2012 08:25 am

The value of the coins will depend upon their condition. So better pictures would help and we need to see both sides. I checked the recent sales prices on Numismedia and.... The 1879 S could be worth $30 in good condition and the value goes up from there depending on the grade (condition). The 1894 is worth substantially more, starting at just over $800, If you're new to handling coins, a word of warning: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CLEAN THEM. It will greatly reduce their value. I'll check back to see if you got more photos posted.

You're using the same filename for them all; they need to have different filenames.

Get the 1894 into a holder soon. You can look up the prices here.

If your using an iPhone (some other phones or iPad etc) you will only be able to upload one photo per day... At least that's what it looks like as all your pics turned to the same one... I'm assuming you tried to load them all and they all switched to the last one you uploaded, which is what happens with my iPhone... As someone mentioned (or rather linked), Numismedia.com is a good resource but I believe there prices are still a bit high.. I'd check completed listings on ebay to see what there going for... I believe that's the best and easiest way to get real time prices and to see what people are actually paying for a specific coin. Other than that subscribing to the grey sheet is an excellent choice. I find that RedBook and numismedia are generally a bit high in prices, some coins there right on with price.. Others there way out of the ball park.

Hello Jonesh529 and welcome to the Community. The 1894 if real, is a nice catch as it's a low mint number. TJB17 recommended getting it into a holder and that's excellent advice. Like Buddy said, don't clean them either.

Thanks for the info NathanASE. Yes I am on my iPhone so that might be the issue. If I decide to sell how close should I ask for the 1894 coin?
Next question is the value depending on the price of silver?

The spot price of silver does have an impact on the value of silver coins. Morgan dollars are one ounce so you will get that price at least. (There's a 'bid' amount and an 'ask'. You will get the lower number. But that is around $30. The rest of the value is based on the rarity and condition of the coin -- and demand. I haven't sold any coins -- I just buy them. But I think you can expect to get about 60% of what the coins are selling for if you sell to a dealer. If you post a good clear photo of that 1894 somebody here (not me) will let you know what it's worth. But they will need good photos. So good luck with those photos. It's a bit of work but it is well worth the effort to get the information you want.

If the 1894 is legit, it will not be tied to the value of silver in the least. I know sending it to a third party grading service was already mentioned, but that is highly recommended. You will definately benifet from it in the end.

So the grading service just let me know what the condition is correct? But not the value right?

Once you receive your coin back from the TPG, it will be assigned a grade. From there, it is fairly easy to find a value. Use completed ebay listings, numismedia.com, and this forum for value guides.

Ok I will try to get it graded this week. How long and how much does it normally cost on average?
