Just got this 1873 Indian cent. Not sure if it is just a die gouge on the neck , but it looks enough like a number or digit that I figure I better post it to see what others thought. Couldn't find any mention of a mis-placed date on the neck anywhere, so probably just a die gouge.

That's interesting! I'm travelling now and don't have my Snow books to check, but I do remember an MPD in this location, but unsure what year(s).

Well...that list only has the major varieties--quite a few others exist for every year. Wish I had my books here--perhaps somebody can help? That's an interesting spot for a die gouge.

Awesome! Thanks for all the help. I knew it looked too much like a numeral to be a die chip. I can't find any info on it as far as rarity etc. NGC nor ANACS have any listed in their records and Heritage doesn't show any sales.

It is unclear to which coin Robbudo was referring, the OP coin, or the ebay coin. So we don't know which coin is the Snow-7, and if it does refer to the OP coin, he did not say that it was a MPD.

I was referring to the OP coin. It is a Snow 7 (I don't acknowledge different coins posted in within a thread). Rick Snow says these are rare, but I believe otherwise - I find 1 of these unattributed Snow-7's on ebay every month or two.

So snow 7 it is. But I can't seem to find a single one of these listed anywhere or any sales. So the million dollar question is ....Whats it worth if I sell it? It is a pretty extreme and noticeable error and apparently not many around. I would think it would carry a decent premium. PS I know someone is going to say " a penny" LOL! So I beat you to it!

OK now we know the Snow 7 is the OP coin. Nest question for those of us who don't know Snow varieties is "Is the Snow 7 a MPD variety or a die gouge?"

Snow officially lists this as an MPD. However, he says "this is an unusual die variety. It was long known, but not listed because it was unknown what caused the prominent bulge on the neck. It is still a mystery, but that is what makes it exciting for collectors." "Possibly from a the upper right corner of a 7 digit punch laying sideways" (typo included in original text). Snow gives it two stars, meaning, "Worthy of a significant premium, probably between 2X and 3X". However,I've found this variety doesn't get much traction. Maybe in a higher grade like this one, if deemed problem free (we haven't seen a pic of the reverse yet!), you could get some interest. If I was looking to sell this, I'd see what The Penny Lady could do (you can Google her).
