About 4 months ago I purchased a small hoard of dated Liberty nickels. This nickel was the best one in the bunch. I'm around VG-10. What do you guys think? I'm amazed by how much money a VG-10 will bring on ebay.

VG might be right. I see some surface nicks that might hurt it a bit but overall its a nice original surfaced coin...nice hoard find...
Rest in Peace

With the second lowest mintage, 1885 lowest, this is a VG coin and great buy.

Looks like a F-12 fro PCGS photo grading guide. Nice one!

This Barber Guy says: NICE! ("V" Nickels are Barber coins!)
Surface nicks? I should look so good when I am 122 years old. Look, a VG coin is almost guaranteed to have a few bumps and bruises. What does it for me is that, overall, it has eye appeal. I see all seven letters of Liberty.
Color is great. So close to fine it is scary.
These nickels, as are all nickels, are seldom found with a complete strike. Pull your nickels out of your pocket or purse and you will see what I mean.
Or go to

where you will find many examples of "V" Nickels.
Each and every one, even the nicest, display a bit of weakness.

OK. Long story short: your 1886 is a VG-10. AT LEAST!

Helzelscoins,

You are correct. As PCGS she'd grade an F12. I may send this one in for a slab & grade.

VG-10 easily, might even pull a F-12 from one of the TPG's.

My thoughts FWIW ...

This is a VG10 coin ... the way I see the photos is that the "I" in Liberty is just not there ... that is the high point of the legend design and a key marker to grade coins in this condition.

A true F12 requires IMHO all letters of Liberty to be visible.

Note as well that the obverse dentils from 11pm to appx 2pm are missing ... might be the result of the slight obverse MAD ...

I'm going VG10 on this lovely coin ... not sure I would send into a TPG given the slabbing cost versus full retail value.

Overall details appear to be F-12 but they may be hesitant to give it that grade with the weak liberty. VG-10 at the minimum.
