Simply saying that one bust extends further than the other or beads are tighter on this or that one isn't enough. A comparison is needed for someone who doesn't know what they are looking for. Zonads pictures work well.

Another way to tell the difference to use actual quarters as references:
1965-1972 and 1974-1978 all have large busts obverses 1979-1989 all have small bust observes

The 1979-89 smaller bust obverses are not the same as the 1973 small bust obverse. The 1973 small bust obverse was for that year only.

Darryldarryl....
When I said the beads are nearer the edge I was assuming that people had seen the photos in the post immediately before mine. Photos of variuous obverses are of course helpful and needed in most cases. I was just pointing out the marker in the photo that to me is the most obvious distinction and one that can be easily used without future reference to the photos once you know it.
I suspect Pokermandude was taking the same approach.....but his photos were removed.

Here' my comparison photo. Look at the detail in hair, how near the beads are to the rim and the actual size of the bust. After practise it will get easy to recognize the types.

I always found the sure fire way was to simply look at the A in Regina... The Small bust the A points in between the denticles and the Large Bust points on the denticle.... There's no mistaken if a coin is worn using this way vs the hair detail

I was looking at the page Zonad linked to earlier in this thread, noticed the "extra rope" variety of May 1999.I don't know their value but they are fun to look for if you grow weary of searching for the elusive large bust.I found twelve of them in a roll not too long ago.
smallcentguy, amazing that you have found three large busts,in over thirty-five years of searching I have yet to find one. They are harder to find unattributed than any Victorian variety.

All three were found in the same vicinity of Ottawa and likely came from the same source at more or less the same time. Life in Ottawa was pretty simple in those days and I would bet the roll they came from was cracked at either Loblaws or Steinberg's at Billings Bridge Plaza. Mine is at the bank but I will pull it out & put up a photo next time I am gettting things in and out.

Yup,the picture shows that clearly the best way to tell is by the distance between the rim and the beads ;) While the A pointing is a great secondary marker;when you're speeding through rolls or ebay listings the bead difference is most efficient. If you really have a lot of time on your hands, you could count beads for identification ;)

DBM lol I tried that one time and after the 3 rd recount I gave up .. The distance from the rim is also a great way for sure but I have also noticed that some are almost the same..Could that be from dies being over used ?

Just to close the loop on this from a few months back.... I pulled a few coins out from the bank today to photograph. This was the best of my two 64s. A borderline 65 I think.....
