Hello ED!
It is definitely Chinese, and I believe it is called a "Cash" coin. There are members here who will tell you the proper period and Emperor.
In truth, we work together to solve these little mysteries. We all have fun doing so.

The reverse side (top image) indicates that the coin was cast at the mint in Suzhou, Jiangsu which would be the years 1668-1670.

This one is Japanese, 5 yen. It is dated Showa (the era of emperor Hirohito) year 49, which equals AD 1974.
And welcome to the forum!

Thank Philadephian, As soon as I scanned it I saw the face and decided it wasn't a coin, but anything is possible. By the way I used to live across the river from the old shipyard. ED.
