being new to the hobby, I am looking at every coin that passes through my hands. this is a quick scan of a 1996 Lincoln that was in my pocket.

i'd give it an EF40 - what say you?

Seems no one likes a good '96 penny anymore. I'd say it's a AU50 possibly maybe I think sure why not.

Let's call it AU-57 for argument's sake. If you're going to be looking at modern Lincolns (super cool, I look at every coin that passes through my hands, too) and if you haven't already I suggest getting a guide to errors and varieties too. Then when you see a 1984 Lincoln you'll know what to look for to find a Double Die Obverse, which (depending on condition) could make your time doubly (ten times more?) valuable...my friend found one just the other day. Keep looking!

Pocket change is absolutely the best way to collect. You never pay more than face value for any coin that enters your collection , and you learn all the nuances of grading, cherrypicking, etc., by developing "an eye" for coins.

Best of all, there's always the potential that you'll find something of greater than face value and make a buck or two if you choose to sell.

Hey...that sounds like fun to me.

Best wishes, and good hunting!
