Hi All,
I have recently purchased this 1699 wild man 24 Marien Groschen that appears to be in neither coin alignment or medal alignment.

The picture of the reverse is when I flipped the obverse over 180.

I have not seen much with this alignment , Is this normal for coins of that period ?

I have a circa 1520 Jochimsthaler guildengroschen where the alignment is 90 degrees off medal alignment. likewise a 13th century Pragergroschen is almost 270 degrees out from medal alignment. Its my guess with these early coins that orientation of the dies was not "policed" consistently. They may not have even been concerned with the alignment of the dies especially as the operator feeding the blanks was likely more worried about retaining fingers!!

Thank you austrokiwi, that is good to know. I was concerned about forgeries as they seems to pop up everywhere. It is hilarious what you said about the operators .

Hello plonker, you can see my coin is also neither in coin nor medal alignment.

The weight of my coin is 13.05 grams and what is yours? I also worried it is fake after buying this coin. The striking of the coin is crude; the silver pitch from hitting the coin is quite different from the more current silver coins. At the time of 17-18th Century, the minting technique of Brunswick was still operated by hammers. There is a double strike at the 12 o'clock on the observe side. This is an example to show the technology of this area was far behind from Prussia and Habsburg Empire at that peroid of time.

(Sorry for the uncontrolled magnification of pictures. As the Free Image Optimizer does not work at the time of my reply, the photos are tailored by another software that I am not familar)

Hi wonghinghi, mine is 13.01g.
Looking at my standard catalog of world coins, the obverse does not fit in to the published example
