MintNewsBlog reports that the mint has sold out of the 2012 Silver Proof Set with a mintage of just 393,757 sets. Seeing that the 1995 Silver Set came in at 549,878, and the 1999-S came in at 804,565....this makes an all time record low mintage for modern silver proof sets. My wonder is, how these low numbers will play out in the short and long term...especially knowing that the 1999-S silver set traded in the hundreds of dollars for a while, and still commands prices of around $100. Even keeping in mind that the coins are available in the overpriced Limited Edition set---it seems the overall mintage will remain very low! Will be interesting to see! Glad I have one for me and my baby boy! PS- Happy Collecting in the New Year! Read more: http://mintnewsblog.com/2013/01/201...et-sold-out/Edited by VetStudent 01/02/2013 4:51 pm

Looks like I'm going to have to drop extra money to get one now.

This mintage number only applies to the JFK half and the Roosevelt dime as the other 12 coins are available in multiple other sets. Still it's nice to have this set along with the others since 1992.

Wonder why they ended it so soon, the 2011 was on sale for ever

Are the half and dime available in silver in any other form (excluding through the prestige set)? Or is this set the only way to obtain them?
So, I know there is the Prestige set (to get the silver JFK and Roosevelt)... Does anyone think that set could be a good buy if it obtains a similarly low mintage?

That sets the only other set I know of for the dime and half. I'm on the fence with that one, I love the idea its just such a steep premium. You can get the quarters for like 44 and the ASE for 55, youre basically being charged 50 for the dime/half/package.

Is there in value into considering the W mint marks?

Interesting the way the mint is driving sales nowadays. I can see a certain segment newly paying for those overpriced Prestige sets, along with more quarter sets, and even the non-silver proof sets (especially to get the Sac reverse). I'm not upset at all, since I think this kind of excitement is good for collecting.

Where is the cheapest place to get those? I looked at the mint site, called them earlier, and they are sold out, as you said. No we have to pay more than 67.95!
Is there any chance that the price goes down over the next couple of years? I found a place to get them for $75.

The 2011 Silver Proof Set was at 572,705 on Dec. 17, 2012, and the 2012 probably would have ended up in the same range if it had been left on sale for all of 2013. Quote: the 1999-S silver set still commands prices of around $100. No separate Silver Proof Quarters Sets were available before 2004. Then again, add in the 147,305 mintage for the 2011 Silver Proof Quarters Set, and the total for Quarters (720,010) is still under the vaunted 1999 Silver Proof Set. Update: The 2012 United States Mint Presidential $1 Coin Proof Set is also listed as Sold Out!

Yes, I was surprised to see this was sold out. I never got mine so I guess aftermarket if not a high premium. The 5 quarter set is still available. I have to get a few of those but held off. Odd they took them off just days after the 2011. Maybe has to do with breaking up sets for that limited offer of proof silver coins at a premium cost more than both the proof and eagle.

The low(er) mintages of the silver set will have a temporary bump until the next sold out item excites the hobby. A year ago, people were predicting great dividends to be had from the low >10,000 mintages of the Medal of Honor and US Army $5 uncirculated coins and just after sell out they were $750+ in the OGP. They cooled off in the latter part of the year and can be gotten today for just over issue price of $500-$550 on the bay. Lower mintages are going to be the norm, not the exception. The 2012 clad has room to appreciate more percentage wise and it too was sold out yesterday.

I paid 22$ for the 2012 half, I didnt think that was a bad price. I dont collect modern silver proof dimes or quarters, all though I do have 2 from the 90's before the State Quarter program, I cracked those sets to get my kennedy proof. I was able to trade for the rest of the kennedys. That should pout that kennedy at an all time low for sure.

Quote: Lower mintages are going to be the norm, not the exception. Exactly...waaaay too many offerings out there. It will be many years before we can truly judge what are "low" mintage numbers...right now there is no low...everything prior is just high

Quote: The 2012 clad has room to appreciate more percentage wise There is a bigger collector base for Clad Proofs, and this is the first all-clad Proof Set ever to finish under one million. Even assuming normal sales are lower than in years past, the 2010 and 2011 full Clad Sets are still over one million (as the 2012 Set most likely would have been, had they kept it on sale through the end of 2013). The 2008 full Clad Set still fetches a high premium, even though its mintage is 1,405,674, simply because of its unexpected sell-out before the end of calendar year 2008. I missed the 2008 Clad Set because I normally buy only the Silver Sets, but this time I got an order in for a 2012 Clad Proof Set just before it sold out.
