I've managed to figure out that this has the yen symbol on it. I can't figure out the era, and thus can't figure out which way the characters are supposed to read so the numbers that I have identified don't help me much. (supposedly the numbers can be read either left->right or vise versa?)

Any knowledge would be appreciated.

yep, thanks for the tip. It is a Taiwanese 1 yuan coin from 1966. If you care to verify this when you have a chance, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.
