Hey guys. A local dealer called me and told me he received some new civil war tokens from a collector here in town. Out of the 30 or so that I could identify, this particular store card popped out at me. It wasn't the highest grade example in the mix, but it was interesting enough that I paid the cost of a large pizza to own it. From what I do know, it's an 1863 Merriam & Co. Boston, MA, on the obverse there is what appears to be a lizard/salamander along with the merchant's address. And on the reverse, there is a portrait of a dog with the inscription "Good for one Scent". I've tried looking through my Rulau tokens catalog but couldn't source it in there and the internet is coming up short of information. Anyone know the Fuld number, along with a bit more history and what an estimate of how much it would go for in the open market? It's a compelling, yet mysterious addition to my Civil War token memorabilia.

That is one of Merriam's most rarest and most sought after. I dont have my Fuld book with me, however, if you only paid $20 bucks for it, you got a heck of a deal. It is worth hundreds, regardless of its present grade.

I've seen the obverse many times but not with that reverse. Cheetah will be able to tell you more than I but thanks for posting it.

MA115D-2a (reverse 1284) R-9 (2-4 known to survive/exist)
As per Kanzinger's 2002 price guide:
Fine/Very Fine: $1250.00 EF/XF: $1500.00 UNC: $2000.00
With the corrosion and verdigris, your specimen is about a Fine 'Details'
I would venture to guess somewhere around $600.00 - $800.00
Congrats.

Thanks again Cheetah...as you can tell, I posted this on a number of forums to get all the information I can. This wasn't listed in my Rulau book.

I just received the Merriam back from NGC and wanted to share the final verdict. I'm happy it graded out like it did and problem free!

Great pick-up! I concur with Cheetah on the estimated value. That said, it's a very desirable token, and two motivated bidders could easily drive that value skywards to the $1,000 range, despite its humble grade.
