I don't know but my mom who has had 10 years of bank work history has been applying for teller positions for months now and has not even gotten a call back but she is 50. When she got her job from the bank she was around 35. She only got 2 and thEY were from credit unions and only local. Not big banks like Soctia, CIBC etc.

I also am a coin roll hunter and I notice that in majority of banks like Scotia and CIBC most of the tellers are below 40 maybe lower to the below 35 range. The only older people are see are not tellers mainly financial adviser's.

Also kind of mad that I went to a bank the other day and the bank my mom applied to for a teller position and the lady when I said I wanted a box of nickels seriously was like so you want a box and handed me a box without coins inside. It took me telling here like 5 times for her to finally understand that I wanted a box with coins inside. I even showed her a box with coins inside and she sill did not get it. I was really mad.

I also think they are sexist because I have only seen 2 boy bank tellers out of 5 banks.

Little bit of a mad thread but I felt that I would get others opinions.

Sounds like your bank may not be the best run.

It does seem though that larger banks dont like giving out coins like that knowing that most of them will end up right back with them

It may be dependent on location, time of the year, etc... I would like to think that employers are NOT biased on age, but there are some out there who are looking for young (less experienced) candidates who will take lower pay versus an experienced who demands higher pay for their experience. I threw my application out there as an experienced (10 years plus) Car Parts Counter person and posted a higher hourly wage with the expectation of NOT being called upon. Less than two hours after posting I had the job. It pretty much boils down to supply and demand. I (the supplier) was in demand at that particular time and location.

As for sexism in the work place, I have stepped into quite a few banking establishment and I would say that it is primarily female on the ground floor with male dominated in the upper levels of management.

Only time will tell.

Are they "ageist?" You betcha. Probably sexist and racist, too. Isn't that illegal? You betcha.

How do they dare...? How do they get way with it? Easy! By using the "magic statement"--- "We chose a more qualified applicant."
"More qualified" doesn't have to mean total years of experience. It can mean the (less costly) applicant with 2 years of experience
beats out the one with 15 years beause he has knowledge of and experience with some obscure and probably meaningless little
specialty thing that suddenly just came to have all the importance and meaning in the world.

Using the magic statement enables a lot of employers to get away with more high-jinks than you could imagine...

Good looking females have always been used to advocate corporate image when it comes to advertising.
It is an extension of this that leads to friendly and reasonably good looking younger females being in front line teller positions, when it comes to the bank dealing with the public.

Ageist and sexist? Definitely!
That's the way large corporates work, when it comes to having a good commercial image.

My local bank (BMO) has several male tellers, including the manager, who fills in wherever he's needed. The CIBC seems to have all female staff. I find that neither of them have any problem with giving out coins, or even exchanging mint rolls for CWR's. I've never gotten coins from other banks.

Not sure about other areas but around me banks have almost every age person working there possible. I suspect they hire people based on ability to do that type of work, around my area that is. Not only the tellers but bank officers as well. And as to male or female. True, almost all females at the banks around me. I suspect that so many people assume a bank job is a female type job, that most men or boys don't apply there. And too with so many Mexicans in large cities, tellers would probably have to be able to speak Spanish nowadays. By me that is for sure. I'm starting to think English is the second language. At several BOA branches by me at least half the signs are in Spanish. One bank I use has only one male employee that I've ever seen. All the rest are females and of all possible ages. I wonder how he feels at work.
I remember a long time ago at a large company I worked for. There was a department of some type that was all female. No male would accept a possition in that department. Women will normally work in a place of all men but men just don't like to work in an invironment of all women.

My bank is all female, I don't think I've ever seen a male worker there. The younger women are tellers and the older move to desk jobs as they work their way up the ladder. I'm not really sure why they have no men but it's fine with me.
