Just wanted to introduce myself and try to get some help regarding some coins that were handed down to me.

A bit of background...

The small collection was given to my father who essentially tossed them in a plastic bag and eventually asked if I wanted them. Now that I have them, I am trying to figure out what to do with them because my wife wants me to either sell them or organize them. The majority are just loose, but the age of the coins would suggest they might be valuable.

My question is, what is the safest way to determine whether they are something worth hanging on to. I know there are a few 'coin shops' around where I live. Or, is there a better way? I appreciate any and all input. Thanks.

Taking them to a coin shop would be a good way to get them authenticated but I wouldn't recommend selling them to a coin shop because they will need to make money on the deal. If you post pics up we can help you identify and figure values out but you'll be surprised how some coins over 100 years old don't even hold that much value. But the first step would probably be for you to post some pics :)

Not the greatest pictures, but for the time being... Quite a bit of loose coins in envelopes and such.
Rest in Peace

If the coins you have are U.S. mintage, I would suggest you purchase the RedBook. This can be found in the coin section in most bookstores. You can even get it from Hobby Lobby. After that check out PCGS.com photo grade to estimate the conditions and numismedia.com for a rough idea of values.

edit - that 1882 CC Morgan in the original GSA plastic is a popular item. Probably worth +/- $200.00 depending on the condition. The image is too small to say for sure.

Wow nice gsa Morgan dollar that holds quite a bit of value as for the other Morgan's and Peace dollars if you could post a list of the date and mint mark that will help us. That Indian Head cent collection is a great start to a full set and would be fairly easy for you to complete it and pass it along in the family.

I assume the GSA is the one in the case? The years on the loose dollars were 1884, 1900, 1922, 1972.

Yes that is a gsa and on the back of the dollar coins below the eagle and wreath check and see if there are letters. That is what determines value it will either be D,S,O,CC or nothing. Look at the gsa for a comparison it will have a CC on the back.

1900(O) - the rest, nothing on the back.

That board may be worth something as well. There are collectors (i.e. moi) who like to keep their coins in the older style boards. Make sure you check the board out as well before giving it away.

One of what I consider my best scores at a show was the old, blue fuzzy Whitman generation 2 board for Liberty nickels thrown in with my purchase of some nickels.

Does the 1882 have a CC on the back? Closer pics on the one in the case will help out a lot and I agree with coinskelly the page could be worth something also
