Hai guys! This is SsuperDdave, posting on tights24's login, and after I do him this favor I'm gonna have some fun with him.

But first. He has this very nice 1876 3CN, a condition rarity in better MS grades. I just shot a couple images of it for him, presented here for your grading input.

That's rim crumbling, the die deteriorating from the outside in. Typical with 3CN's, along with serious clashing and die cracks.

Interesting...

I'm going to say MS-65... but I don't know much about grading them so I could be way off.

Keep in mind - as I mentioned, this is a condition rarity in higher MS. Although a $250-300 coin in 63, that value triples at MS64.

I'm not 100% sure on American grading standards, although, from what I've learned about III cents is that, when you can see distinct lines in the III (vertical) it shouldn't be less than MS-62. that being said I think MS-64 is a good grade for this.

Wow - you just made me have a heart attack.

Hope these links help from HA:

MS 63 http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleN...o=7672#Photo

MS 63http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleN...o=7538#Photo

MS 64 http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleN...o=9322#Photo

MS 64 http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleN...=11141#Photo

I would have to say MS63. Either way, WOW

EDIT: My reasoning for MS63 is the dings. The dang dings I think put it slightly lower. Waiting for the experts to chime in

That's exactly the two that I am waiting for as well. I have it listed here at the show as a MS63+. If it doesn't sell, it's off to get slabbed to know for sure. Which of course will have me extremely nervous if I catch someone on a bad day....

I really like the coin from what I can see of these photos. I would suggest that some better lighting be used to see what the luster is like in hand, though.

The coin is fairly well struck with those rims strongly upturned. You can see that by the wire rimmed edges.

Without booming luster, I doubt this would grade 65 but it does have a gem-like look to it as far as lack of marks. Again, based on the limitations of the photograph...maybe lighting might show up more hairlines, I would say this has a strong chance at 64.

Can you possibly do a little post-processing of the photo and bring the light levels up? Maybe the details are all there but levels might help?

I will pass that on to Dave. We are here with the lighting, camera, and coin, so we will surely be able to get some different pics posted.

FWIW, under a loupe it looks like a proof strike hands down. It actually took us a little bit to convince ourselves that this was a MS coin and not a proof. It was purchased under the pretense that it was a proof, and it had us fooled for a little while.

Thank you sir. More pics to come when Dave gets back.

That was tights24. We're both logged in on the same computer, and he didn't realize he was on my login. Turnabout is fair play.

Prethen, I'm going to do a fresh set of it, using differing lighting. There's a bunch of luster on it. Will be back to this thread in about 45 minutes.

I hate shooting lustrous nickel. The eye likes it far better than the camera. It's the rim crumbling that has me thinking Business Strike. See what you think:
