A decade of lousy guesses has taught me that these are usually Maravedis, but it helps to have it confirmed (particularly if I'm wrong again). This one is in even worse shape than usual. 21.5 x 3 mm, 10 gr. Identified - moved to World Coins forum - Sap

This one's driving me crazy. Is that a large date running bottom to top at the right side of the reverse? Perhaps 1615 or 1616? Is there anything about where this coin was found that might shed some light?

Philadelphian, this is one of those coins that look better in hand than on scan. Having said that, I can't make out a thing on the reverse. My wife tried photographing it, with no luck. I've tried a pencil rubbing, ditto. This one's going to take a nice long soak in the oil bath and we'll look at it in a year or so.

East India Company, Bombay Presidency. CU Dump pice. You can tell from the base of the bale mark on the obverse. The scan is almost upside down, the tip of the balemark with the C is on the bottom. The bale mark is BEIC. See KM 226 and 227. In that shape may be worth a buck. Can't tell the date at all. Minted 1802ish to the 1820's.

No problem. That was an easy one :) Probably doesn't hurt that I collect Indian and Islamic. The bale-mark was the mark that the EIC would stamp on their goods, the predecessor of a brand name or logo. The various other companies (West India Company, United East India Company, etc) all had their own bale-marks.

I suppose the "bale mark" descends from the medieval bale seal, lead seals stamped with identifying symbols that were placed on bales of cloth or other goods.

As I said at the beginning, "a decade of lousy guesses". Each time I've posted an unidentified lump of copper thinking that it's an Indian dump, it's turned out to be a Maravedis. Natural justice has now prevailed. I think I've recognised a Spanish coin and whadda ya know? It's Indian.
