Since I picked up a nice "with Rays" Shield nickel over the weekend, I am debating on whether or not to upgrade my 20 Cent Piece for a "Problem Free" version;

There is just something gnawing at my about the "Details" insert.

What do you think?

Thanks for your interest!

oih82w8 - Another 'problem' coin that looks so awesome. I love the die crack.

Suggestions -
1. Break it out of the holder and enjoy the actual beauty of the coin.
2. 'Photoshop' the Details insert to remove any written description of the problem. (Then sell it on ebay)

Obviously I'm not helping.

That should have been "me" instead of "my" but that's okay I reckon.

In reality that is exactly what I would have said only for real. Not number 2 but 1 is what I'd do. That to me is a nice coin. For an Album or Type set would be great. Possibly 90% of the world would no see any problems.

It's a nice coin as is. I'd plug more empty holes before upgrading this one.

The only other "problem" coin I have to upgrade is the Arrows & Rays Half http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...tionID=6375. The only "holes" remaining are on the "Gold Page" and I am having second thoughts on that as well...awful pretty and awful expensive as well!

Another vote for cracking out and keeping.
You should have included a poll.

"Cracking out" is not an option with a "slabbed 7070" set.

Well, what do you want to upgrade it to. High grade 20cent pieces are not that easy to come by with the combination of them being slabbed without any "details" and the seller not having lost their mind with asking price.

Also, once you get into MS grades, these coins will legitimately be worth more than some of your gold page holes. Higher MS, all of them.

I like the rotated die error. Can you upgrade to a problem-free AU piece that also has a rotated die? That quest might keep you looking awhile.

If only the coin could talk, it could answer a lot of questions like... Whose pockets have it travelled in? What interesting stories could it recall? And also it could identify the man guilty of molesting it to the point of being "Cleaned/Scratched"!!

Personally, I like the coin; it is a nice representative example of this very curious type and did not cost an arm and a leg. I knew an old doctor who had a stash of at least 100K in rare coins at home. He died recently at the age of 93. He had many Double Eagles, and other rare coins, and did not care what grade they were in (a much different approach than nowadays with competing Registry Sets.)

So, if you are happy with it then there is no sense in upgrading. All of the details are there and it is obviously a coin that circulated a bit. I'm sure it will make a nice addition to your 7070.

Who are you trying to kid, oih82w8? You're gonna upgrade no matter what we say, aren't cha? We're gonna see it for sale here soon, right?

I was on the fence. I love the S/S, rotation and die crack. The obverse picture is stunning. However, with the in-slab picture, my eyes are now immediately going to the scratch, every single time. It's killing me. The cleaning is no big deal to me though.

Anyway, having followed your 7070 quest, I'll cast a dissenting vote and say rip the band aid off right now and start the hunt for a replacement.

That scratch probably doesn't look that bad in hand. Photos seem to make them look worse because of the way the light hits it.
