At the current time I am unable to post a picture of the coin that I am going to be describing.

My wife brought home a coin of Panama that was minted in 1968. She gave it to me because she thought it was cute and that I would like it. I'm hoping that someone can give me more information about the coin so that I can show her that at least I'm interested and have taken the time to learn more about what she has given. So please help me out.

On the face of the coin is a picture of a conquistador and has the lettering of VN Gvardo de Balboa. It is the size of a modern US quarter amd weighs 5.6 grams. Which is .1 gram less than the modern US quarter.

I am curious because there is no denomination marked on the coin unless it is a Balboa. Does any one know what the metal content is (clad or silver)?

Also, where would this coin fit into the monetary system of Panama and how would it compare to US currency? Would it fit in similiar to our quarter or half dollar.

From time to time I find foreign pennies in a box of our pennies and sometimes 5 centavos also, but never a coin like this.

This page show coins from Panama, and by the description sounds like a Panama km11a 1/4 Balboa (1966-1993). I believe Balboa is the denomination. You may have to look at Krause for the metal content.

edit - fixed link code and mistype

That is exactly the duplicate image of the coin in my hand. I'm the proud owner of a 1/4 Balboa. But how many Centesimos equal a Balboa. 25 centesimos equal a 1/4 balboa.

Thanks for the information. Kind of you.

It does appear that 25 dentesimos does equal a 1/4 balboa. To the uninitiated all the balboas do appear to be alike. But size evidently does matter with their coins as with the US coinage.

I picked up a half Balboa at the F.U.N. Show last weekend and its almost the size of a US half dollar. The 1/10 Balboa its about the size of a US dime.

We recently had two Panamanian students staying with us. They saw a Panamanian proof set on my desk and explained that the US dollar is the currency of preference in Panama. Also the Balboa coins are locally referred to as Dollar, half dollar etc.
