Because the Bad Stuff™ wandering around to cause damage is molecular in size, and the relative space available is pretty huge.

What about the self-adhesive holders? Do you guys recommend those?

I bought a super flat clinch stapler from Staples for under $15 (I think). It works great

They are said to be safe. But, I would never use them. I have rec'd coins in the adhesive type 2x2, but, immediately remove the coin.

I'm a needle nose user as well. I just can't give up my Milton Stapler.

I would be nervous with the tape idea. Especially if your coins are ever kept in a warmer environment. the glue on the tape may seep into the coin area.

I used to flatten the staples and store the 2x2's in PVC pages. That was some time ago.
The mylar of the 2x2 sometimes used to stick to the PVC, making the removal of the 2x2 virtually impossible.
The problem was mostly solved by NOT flattening the staples.

I don't do either of these anymore.

I now use clear polypropylene album pages, not PVC pages.
Killed two birds with one stone.
Polypropylene album pages don't need plasticiser to soften them, and as a result the Mylar of the 2x2's don't get stuck in the album pockets anymore.
It makes no difference now, if I flatten the staples or not.
