Here is my 1771 Catherine the Great from NYINC:) It is chunky but not nearly so as SSuperdaves;) I don't think I did too bad at $20.00 for this one;) I am thinking my only regret is not getting the others...hmmm.? The wt on this one is 53.68 grams and it measures 43.5mm's. Do you think lines are die cracks on the upper part of the reverse on obserse? Edited by TJsCoins 01/18/2013 08:32 am

Very nice details! I'm not familiar with these coins, so I'm unsure about the surface defects you mention. I usually look at the date first on coins--what are the last two digits?

This is an amazing weight difference. I wonder if it was deliberate or just QC; my 1764 is a lot heavier than yours, too.

DV, here are close ups with better pics of what I thought might be die breaks. I am no pro at these either. Ssuperdave, as I have mentioned above I am no pro but I was thinking the same thing about the weight difference. It seems to me like a lot, but maybe they did not care? Wish I had a better explanation.

Those new pics are great--to me it looks like a break and some shifting on the die.

I just came across this old thread which seems to provide an possible explanation for the huge disparity in weights between yours and SsuperDdave's. Some really nice pickups!

Poor quality planchet. You can see the flow lines on the reverse around the wreath, too. If it were a die crack the tip of the wing would be affected. Not an overstrike, too much detail in the high points. Nothing visible of an undertype in the field either.

Very nice coin. I have one of these my self (different year I think) but in much worse condition.

I bought one of these at NYINC a couple of years ago, probably from the same vendor. Love coins like this that for $20 are more interesting than half the $800 coins they sell at that show!

The rather formidable Catherine the Great was German born. She could out perform any of the Russian Counts around her in the bedroom!
