I've loved these coins for a long time and I'm 99% committed to buying the set, but it's a large sum for me. Anyway, my LCS has a set of 11 War nicels, PCGS MS65, for $270.00 They are gorgeous--clean, great strikes, white, full of luster. I asked him to put them aside for me and I'll be in in two weeks. Now, we collect what we love and no guarantee of a return, but what are your thoughts about the future of this set? I really know very little about their place in the collecting community. (There so much to collect!)

It's your $$. The last set of 65s went for $477, you know where.

I'm not much of a War Nickels collector, but price seems good.

I was afraid the price was high. I had been trying to stick to two types of coins, but I just can't do it. Yes, there are coins you want and what else can you say. So, fioti, you have them, too?

@blackjack- are you the type of collector that derives more pleasure and learns more by pursuing a piece at a time and learning along the way what you like? or do you like ready made collections selected by somebody else. I guess that's the question. the price is just a price- coins are worth what we emotionally reason they are worth- in some respects you are taking a shortcut, you realize that, don't you?

cc: You are right about the emotional side of this purchase. As far as pursuing them piece by piece, you bring up a good point. That's what I'm doing with my Morgan date set, and, yes, it's a challenge I love. I've examined this set of nickels, and each one is a gem. I couldn't do better in this grade if I tried. In some respects, I am not riding under my own power. My dealer put these together--and he's someone I admire and trust. And to answer the essence of your question, I am a learner and a collector. You can't take that away from me. You provide some good thoughts. Thank you.

"So, fioti, you have them, too?" ======================================
I have many sets, all from circ. & not that grade. I would think if I were looking for one, all 65, I would jump on it. If it's your desire to knock out all of 'em at once, I dont think you'll find a much better price. If he's open to haggling, more power to ya.

blackjack, Since I'm not a big fan of the ' War Nickels' the only place I could use for comparison would be ebay. Did you check there to see the prices (I'm sure you did)? I'm so use to seeing dark, tarnished War Nickels. I really do like the cleaner examples. Good luck with the purchase and if you get them don't forget to post the pics so we can all see them.

Its your money, spend it the way you like it and have fun. However don't be surprised if you don't get your money back, this is a hobby, not an investment

Thanks for the input, my friends. I'm glad to hear the price is right, fioti. Thanks for the support. I'll see about haggling when I have the money in hand. Right now they're in a small wn bag in the dealer's floor safe. Something about this feels secretive, almost illicit, a ransom I will bring back from the kingdom of coins for all these boring hours I work in order to have cash for this passion, my "shelter from the storm." (I was lucky to retire young, though not wealthy. I work for coins, a double entendre.) And, mds, I checked ebay last night. Not a lot there in PCGS MS65. The ones I'm getting are gorgeous, white and lustrous. I'm a big fan of the Jefferson nickel. You'd love these, mds. I will post pics when I get them; planning on picking them up on the 31st, along with the 2009 mint sets, for the commemorative Lincolns. Yeah, mkman, I'm buying this one for me. I've thought about it and I couldn't justify it if it were for investment alone. I have no thoughts of selling it. I buy Eagles and rounds for speculation.

I also have a set of MS65 PCGS War Nickels and I'm not saying exactly what I paid for them since they were bought over the course of a few years but I was wondering if any of yours are graded FS (full steps)? The label would carry that designation. I am upgrading my Set to include the FS version. Seems that's the big interest in Jefferson's nowadays. When I go to sell my duplicate non FS I find all buyers want is full steps or at least 5 steps version. So far I have 16 of them but only 4 in War Nickles. Don't even know if all the War Nickels can be had in FS. Does anyone have any PCGS FS War Nickels or know if I can eventully obtain a full set of them? Sorry now I didnt go that direction in the first place. Just my thoughts Edgman

edgman, good question. I'm glad you posted. You know, I didn't see the FS designation on the label. And when I was researching them last night, I noticed that people ARE looking for the FS designation with the Jeffersons. I'm curious now and I'll call the LCS. I will post his answer.

edgman, I called "my guy" and he affirms that the set I'm looking at doesn't have the full step designation. I can back out if I want, he tells me; I can look for those with an FS designation; whatever I want. But, he says, a set with the FS designation will probably run about $150.00 more than the $270.00 for this set. That's too deep for me. Problems, problems, problems. I asked him if he thinks my potential set is still a good investment (bad word!) and he thinks so, especially as these are so white.
