Does anyone know of plugs available for holes we can "block out" on Dansco albums? One example would be the last 3 holes of the Lincoln Wheat album, but I have others I'd like to block out, especially in special purpose albums I am putting together using Dansco blank pages.
I did a search of previous posts and found suggestions for space fillers, but I want to make the hole "go away". My first two thoughts were:
1) Cutting slivers from dowel rods and painting them tan to match the Dansco color, and placing them between the windows on the album page
2) Find tan colored round stickers (or white stickers I can color tan with my ink jet) that I stick to the album page on the outside of the window. If I did that, I would place a disk of plain paper over the opening first to prevent the adhesive on the sticker from adhering to the window.
Has anyone had any success in this area?

It wouldnt be the cheapest solution but you could get extra pages and cuts rounds out of those if you want it to look as close as possible

Contact Dansco and see if they will send you the plugs that I am sure they just through away when they make the albums. John1

Specifically for the Lincoln Album, you can get mint tokens from older US Mint uncirculated sets. They are struck on a cent planchette and are perfect IMO. See my 7100 pictures for an example.
They might be a little tricky to find - I got mine here from a generous CCF'er who had them left over after cutting open mint sets to put in their albums.

I tend to fill those extra holes with additional coins I have from the series. Things you may want in your Lincoln are maybe a few proof examples, extra keys, or even a high grade Indian cent, Memorial cent and shield cent.

Thanks for the feedback. I checked Dansco's web site and could not find where they offer the plugs. I have read in other threads that they aren't at all receptive to inquiries. I need too many plugs to cut them from other pages even if I had a way to cut the plugs in the first place. I actually do have 4 of those mint tokens, and if my Lincoln album was the only problem I would be tempted to do just that, or do what muddler said and put in something extra, but I have other pages that will have LOTS of holes that will never be filled. I have decided to create a collection of circulated 2005-2010 U.S. coins. I bought 3 binders and 11 pages (mostly blanks) from Dansco to create this set. Some of the coins work out perfectly (quarters and Presidential dollars) with no empty spaces. But others, like dimes, will have LOTS of holes. (The blank dimes page has 42 holes and there were only 12 circulation dimes minted from 2005-2010). I am limiting the collection to 2005-2010 since that was when the mint put a satin finish on mint sets. I have all mint sets from 1965 to present and plan to go back to 1959 since the Wheat pennies end in 1958. I have all proof sets from 1968 to present and plan to stop there since that's when proofs started coming out of San Francisco. So the bulk of my collection is in mint and proof sets. I have a few slabbed items like the Ike varieties, wide rim/narrow rim SBA, and large/small date pennies to complete the mint sets, and I have both large and small date 1970 proof sets and the 71 and 72 brown Ikes to complete the proof collection. Other than that, all I have is a 7100 Wheat penny album (and I'm missing the same coins you are, KenKat, but I weaseled out and got a weak D '22), a 7113 Nickel album (a tribute to my father, ending the year he died), and the good ol' 7070.

Of your two choices, I like option one better. Option two feels more like an afterthought. In my albums, I fill those holes with duplicates. I try to choose duplicates that are significant or sentimental to me (birth years, for example). Quote: I checked Dansco's web site and could not find where they offer the plugs That website does not belong to Dansco. This is their website, and it does not have much.

jbuck, I just got an order confirmation from the Dansco Store (whoever they are) and asked about plugs. I will post here if they know of anything. I had read that the actual Dansco isn't very communicative, especially about the new 7070. I came up with a 3rd alternative, and that is colored dots (that match the page) stuck to the windows themselves. That would actually be rather easy. One of the things I bought to create this collection is a complete 7143 State Quarter album. I only need the last two pages, but the number of ports per page on the blank quarters page is different so I spent a bit more and got the whole album to get the 2005-2008 pages. Page 1 of 7144 can be purchased separately so I got that and a blank 7144 page to get through 2010. That should cover all the quarters and leave me with 3 scrap pages (pages 1-3 of the 7143) to experiment on.

Ive dealt directly with Dansco before for slides, they take a while to respond but if you email them they will get back to you. Whether or not they could help for this I'm not sure. The Dansco store is just one of their sellers and usually has as good of prices as anyone I've seen

Just use some cents. The Franklin album has 5 extra holes. I put a strongly struck Franklin reverse after the 1963D hole, and the bottom row has a Seated Liberty, Barber, Walker, and Kennedy.

In my Lincolns I used the coin that comes w/ a soft pack which signifies the mint.

The suggestion I made last time is to ask any collector to save the black or white volara plugs from the ringed Air-Tite holders. They fit perfectly in to the equivalent sized hole in any of the albums, not just Dansco, and can be easily colored to match the page color or left as is. Many of the larger coin supply warehouses sell the rings separately from the plastic capsule and might send some plugs free of the appropriate size if you ask them nicely or better yet, place an order with them.
I tend not to add additional coins, duplicate or otherwise to a finished album, nor leave the extra unlabeled holes empty, either. These plugs are also inert, unlike placing a sticker inside the slide, which could migrate to other coins covered by the slide. It's best to limit the amount a foreign contaminants inside an album and the plugs are ideal for this purpose.

I definitely wouldn't put a sticker inside the slide, but I'm considering it on the outside of the slide. Putting a plug between the slides seems sub-optimal. In that case I could use a volara plug as you suggested, or a special coin as others have suggested, but I'd like to make the hole "go away". That's why doing something outside of the slides seems the best route. I'll do some experimenting with the throw away pages I'm getting soon. I looked into "arch punches" mentioned in a previous discussion. There may be a less expensive option if I'm only trying to cut though the outer layer, outside of the slides.

Lars, I'm working on the same custom album myself and one suggestion I can make to you to cut down on the number of unfilled holes is this: for the dimes you can use a blank quarter page with 16 ports instead of the 42 for the dime page. You put the dimes in foam inserts from airtites and the foam fills the hole and centers the dime in it. The foam insert concept would also work with the cents. I'm about to order my blank pages or binder, but am trying to think it through for any other creative ways to lay out the coins while minimizing the number of empty leftover holes.... My count is 162 coins (18 cents, 14 nickels, 12 dimes, 62 quarters, 12 halves, 12 Sac dollars, 32 Presidential dollars) - that's a lot to squeeze into one album!

billymac, I have already ordered my albums. I went with 3 albums for a personal reason (I'm going to introduce my sons to coin collecting by noodling the coins from circulation and will give pennies, nickels, and dimes to the 6-year-old and quarters to the 8-year-old. I will do the halves and dollars myself). I think the dime page will work out OK. There are 12 ports in the top window. I purchased samples of half a dozen pleather products and plan to find the best match and cut pieces the size of the bottom two windows and just slide them in to fix the dimes page. I will do that for any group of ports that are all empty on a complete window for pennies, nickels, and halves as well. Then I just need to find the best solution for individual ports. The Dansco stuff should be here Thursday and the samples should be here by Saturday, so maybe I can start experimenting this weekend. I went with single penny, nickel, dime, half dollar, and Sac dollar pages. I got the same number you did with 18/14/12/12/12. For quarters, I bought a 7143 album to get the last two pages. Those pages are 20 ports per page and hold exactly all of the 2005-2008 Statehood Quarters and all the ports are labeled. #7144 page one can be purchased separately, has 12 ports, and holds the 2009 DC and Territory Quarters. I then added a 12 port Blank DC & Terr page, so I will have 2 ports to cover on quarters. For Pres dollars I bought two blank Pres dollar pages and will exactly fill them up. That's 11 pages, so I will put pennies, nickels, and dimes (3 pages) in a 5/8" binder, quarters (4 pages) in a 3/4" binder, and halves and dollars (4 pages) in a 3/4" binder. How are you labeling the blank pages? I'm using a Label-It label printer and clear tape.

Lars, I think you've got a nice solution going there. My ideas have gotten me down to 9 pages at the moment, as I was shooting to get them into one book, but it seems one page too many for a 1 1/4 inch binder.... So I'm still pondering my approach.
As far as labeling goes, my approach to custom albums has been to print coin names/dates onto a sheet of clear plastic fed through my inkjet and to superglue the two top corners to my Dansco pages to create a lift able clear overlay.
