I don't know 8 reale pieces that well but the obverse seems very crude and poorly executed I would say fake

I am definitely not an expert, but I have seen many and have few 8 reales coins from the 18th and 19th century and that looks in way too good a shape for a " piece of eight " from 1801.

But it also looks tooled.

Be patient there is a new book coming out on these pieces by the ANS in 2014.

It's a Class 3 Modern/Replica Fake. More of a replica type than a contemporary counterfeit of any distant period. Contemporary counterfeit being defined as co-circulating with the legitimate pieces back in the day (i.e., late 1700/early 1800's). Probably Iron/Nickel but you can never be sure from a picture ... ~ $5.00.

I think $5 is generous for a poor quality sand cast like this. Maybe in the $1 junk box?

Ouch, the design is so of, it's not even a sand cast from a genuine coin ...
You couldn't get a more easy-to-spot fake, with any catalog or auction listing you can see that the coin doesn't match.
