I was going through my childhood collection and came across this and have no idea of what could have caused it. The note on the 2x2 says it was found in late 1969, and I was living in a San Francisco suburb at the time. Any opinions welcome. I'm guessing PMD, but can't figure out what it is. The image is impressed and in reverse.

two nickels pressed together in a vice or smacked against each other with a hammer is what it looks like to me.

Is it an impression in the coin or extra metal on top?

It looks like a substance of some sort was put on the coin and then another coin was pressed into the substance. John1

Yeah that looks like two nickels were stuck together not with extra metal but with verdigris...

jmkendall...Am I correct in saying ( as per my picture) , that the oddity is below the actual face of the coin itself...? Then it looks like some one may have used another part coin and a hammer, or vise and the partial coin used will not interfere with the rim of the original coin...?

Wert, great picture but no, the feature is above the obverse. The larger light rust colored area is above the obverse and Monticello is below that feature, but may be impressed into the obverse as well.

I think someone may have melted two together.

Kinda looks like that liquid steel stuff that comes in a tube. Might have used that and pressed 2 together.

lets remember that this coin was taken out of circulation after...at most 11 months, and in 1969. I'm not sure the liquid steel stuff was around then. Though the thought had crossed my mind.

The dark gunk is on the surface of the nickel and impression is in the gunk, it is not into the surface of the host coin.

It is old glue or another similar substance with a mirror image impression from another nickel.
