It doesn't look like any pictures I've found or fit any of the VarietyVista descriptions, so I'm guessing it's just severe Strike Doubling (though I really really want it to be true doubling). What do you make of this? It's strongest on DOLL and the entire western half of the reverse lettering, leaves, and wing tips with minimal to no doubling on the extreme eastern side.

I have another '65 with similar findings but not to this extent.

Dagnabbit! Seems like this MD is far more interesting-looking than most of the trivial yet value-added die doubling I see in pictures. Hmmph!

If it were me, I would keep it as a reference. That is an excellent example of MD.

EDIT: I just noticed the date! I would also keep it because it is part silver.

if this coin were to be graded by pcgs or ngc would they put on the label MD? how often do they mistake a coin like this for a DD?

I have never seen a slab with the notation of " Machine Doubling" although I suppose there could be a few out there. Not only is it completely pointless but you would also have to spend extra money for the notation. It would be the equivalent of getting a "Die Chips" or "Die Polishing" notation, they are all an acceptable part of the minting process, not an error or variety, and do not add any value to a coin. As far as a TPG confusing MD with hub doubling, TPGs do sometimes make mistakes but I would like to think that any so-called professional grader that made such an atrocious mistake would be out of a job because there should not be any confusion between the two in the hands of someone who has examined and graded thousands of coins for a living.

I find quite a few of these on the 1966 especially.
