I am not American but I do see the occasional Shield Cent up here in Canada. I don't mind the design, but I do find it a little too bland.

I liked 1 or 6 personally. If they were going with the shield I would have preferred 14. 12 is pretty cool too, most of them actually are really good. They just seem to go with the one that has the easiest design a lot lately

 with basebal... if it had to be a shield, 14 is more interesting IMO. I also like 1, 8, 9, 10, 17 & 18. Hey, at least I narrowed it down to 7. |

wow never saw these.. I like 1 and 2 alot, but then again they already used the capitol on the lincoln 2009

Other than what they picked, I like #2 then #15. As was previously said, we had the capital (#2) in 2009, and I think #15 would have been difficult on a monochrome & relatively small coin. But I think #13 was the best pick historically and for execution of the design.  Edited by Fuzzy317

Thanks for posting this. I hadn't seen the design choices before.
Of the ones showing the Capitol building, I would have chosen #1, but I'm sure all of the Capitol ones were passed on because of the 2009 Lincoln Presidency cent showing the Capitol under construction.
Overall I agree with Argentum that #14 and #18 were the best. I like 14 because it bucks the trend and says 1¢ instead of spelling it out. And 18 is a nice tribute to the wheatback cent, although I never understood what the wheatback cent was supposed to represent. Possibly the breadbasket of America?
#11 is just downright scary. Those eyes remind me of the dead eyes on the new Jefferson nickel. I still wish they had kept the one-year obverse design on the 2005 nickel.

I don't like any of the ones with the Capitol, really. (Maybe if I saw how it looked in coin color... then again, we kind of have that one with the fourth bicentennial cent, and I don't really like it too much either.)
Further on the list... 9 is just too weird (though I think one of the bicentennial nickels was arranged similarly). 10 looks like a token (and everyone would've wondered what's up with the flag). 12 is just ridiculous. 16 is, if anything, even more ridiculous than 12. 18 could've benefited from better-drawn wheat stalks, but as pictured it's also awful.
This leaves 11, 13 (OTL), 14, 15, and 17. I agree 15 doesn't look much like an eagle, and it's confusing anyway. 17 does look like an eagle... a tiny one (and I really see little reason for an eagle to appear there anyway). I don't know why I don't like 11.
Of course, 13 is the OTL design, which with better alternatives I would've probably called awful as well! But amid such low competition it's almost at the top of the pool... losing only to 14, which is thus my favorite design in that bunch. Third place goes to 9 (despite the weirdness); 11 is probably next (then 17 and maybe 1... it's indeed a thin competition).

I not sure that some of those designs would have looked right on a coin the size of the cent. 17 would have been my choice since the Eagle is a national symbol. Of course, if it was up to me, I would have never changed from the Indian Head cent or the Flying Eagle cent. Ken |

Number 9 would have been my choice. It would be nice to have the flag depicted on a circulating US coin.

Love those eagles. My favorite would be #16 followed by #'s 15 & 17. |

I never saw these either. I would have liked to see 17. Return to the Eagle reverses.

I've stated it before - I like the current shield design; it's clean, simple, and symbolic. The Lincoln Memorial design, like the ones depicting the Capitol, was unbalanced, and the Wheat cent design a little too bland but still eye-pleasing. |
