I was going through some nickels and couldn't help but feel that this coloring isn't environmental. The coin appears to still have some luster. I know the original black beauties were in the late 50's, but could this possibly be a modern day 1995-D black beauty from over annealing the planchet? Thanks for looking.

Really worn for a 1995. Looks like some post mint mutilation.

With just a little knowledge of how to work Google, you can easily find most of the answers of any number of questions you might have. Here is a slabbed "Black Beauty". Notice the difference?

It is very easy to make black copper nickel coins.
Just for a joke I will heat to low red heat a newly issued copper nickel coin, then quench it it cold water.
Then release it back into circulation. You should see the looks on the check out chick's faces!

The nickel shown in the first post was heated years ago, and the nearly black oxide coating has worn thin on the high points.
Value? Five cents.

I think that Anacs has even gotten the term correct here.
Kind of tired of all the talk on annealing errors, copper
or whatever migration etc. I own one of these coins myself.
The color runs deep, not just on the surface. It is not really black
but a gun metal color. You will know it when you see one in hand.
Even colored on all devices and fields both obv. and rev. and also
on the outer edge of the rim all the way around.
