I'm looking for a newnplace to find coins other then where I get them now. Where do you usually go for your coins? I would rather treasure hunt then buy off eBay/amazon.

Coin shops, antique shops, flea markets, garage sales, estate sales, Craigslist, thrift shops, and sometimes places you would never even think

Old coins come from old people. I've heard of people using Craigslist. Estate sales. Consignment shops (I've Made some good hits there), some pawnshops, antique malls and some yard sales or flea markets. Run an ad in a local newspaper or church bulletin. Then there's coin roll hunting. And let's not forget the rejection slot at Coinstar.

99% of my coins come from ebay. It's the best treasure hunt on earth.

I also buy the vast majority of my coins from ebay or coin shows. Hardly ever B&M coin shops.

As a full-time dealer, I do most of my buying and selling at shows with other dealers. Those coins that come back with me for my site are either purchased from other dealers or are obtained from a group of clients who either consign the pieces or sell them outright.

The majority of my coin purchases are from personal web sites of dealers I know and trust and Collectors Corner. Other sources frequently used are local coin shops and coin shows. ebay is the last place I would consider buying coins.

Go to the bank and get some rolls. That's a real treasure hunt. :)

Most of my coins in the $100 to $1000 range have come from public auction. 2 or 3 coins per year have been obtained in this way over a period of about 40 years. Most of these are 400+ years old, and ranging in age back to the invention of coinage.
My collection grows at a rate of about 10 to 50 additions to it per year. Almost all of the lesser valued coins have been obtained from all of the sources mentioned in posts previous to this one.
More than 75% of my collection has coins that would have an individual value of less than $5.

I'm a type collector and I try to go for the semi-key date pieces within each series rather than the more common dates. For example, I just purchased a nice 1862-S Seated quarter for my collection. I went with a less common Civil War issue rather than the more common one like 1857. Anyway, since I'm looking for specific dates, I purchased quite a few through Heritage Auctions and some web based sellers I trust like JJ Teaparty. My LCS doesn't have the selection of these nice, no problem semi-key dates that I am looking for. Once in a while they do but not too often. Quite a few purchased at shows too.

I do get my coin rolls from the bank, but trying to get the old coins (like the morgans and anything pre-1920) is nearly impossible. Have any of you tried a metal detector?
