Just curious on how many other civil war collectors are on here? I love the civil war for the rich history they represent to our history. I love history as well and like to visit civil war battle fields. This year I hope to make it to the 150th at Gettysburg. Wondering where other civil war collectors buy their coins, looking for leads to some good sites. I prefer xf45-ms coins thanks for any help or advice.

I'm one love the coinage from that era. My favorite of course is the Two Cent Piece, I like all of Gobrecht's designs really, and Longacre. I buy my stuff all over, ebay, auctions, coin shows, coin shops, online orders, etc.

I LOVE the civil war and the history of it and think theres a lot of lessons from it that we seem to be forgetting now a days.
I do have one of the Baslow restrike cents, hoping to get a complete set of all three kinds at some point and really would like to start adding more civil war coins. I always try and get the civil war dates for my type set when possible as well.
I do have a question about the tokens hopefully someone can answer, most seem to be about the same size from the ones I've seen. Are there any albums that would work with them like a Dansco or something to keep them all together?

I like the individual stories of the Civil War and generally collect around that theme. With that, I collect the small paper money of the era. U.S.Fractional, Southern States fractional, obsolete issues, and obsolete business issues of the time. There is more of this type of issues than 1 person could possibly collect and there are still real bargains sitting in dealers stock at the shows. It's interesting to research a specific piece and discover the history of a local region. Fred Reed's articles on obsoletes are always entertaining and historically informative.

1861 O Seated Liberty Half DollarThe New Orleans Mint minted these coins for three different "Entities" during this year, (US Government/Union, the State of Louisiana during February 1861, and then the Confederate States of America when the mint was turned over to them).

Fun fact: I had an ancestor in the Civil War. His name was Henry Mason and he was first-generation off the boat, fighting for the Union. I kind of suspect that side of my family being Irish was a big motivator in his joining up--the Irish weren't treated as badly as slaves, but certainly had a lot in common with free men and women of colour in terms of being discriminated against for jobs and how they were treated in general (y'all have heard of No Irish Need Apply, right?). That said, I don't really collect Civil War era specifically. I am completing an IHC set, though, which of course overruns the Civil War years (my oldest coin is an 1862 IHC). It's incredible to me to hold a coin from those years in my hand and realise we still considered people to be property back then. We've come so far, still so far to go until we can honestly stand up and say "with liberty and justice for all" and mean it. I do think the currency of the time is beautiful, though.

Have you considered Civil War Era currency? Just picked up this for my collection. My 1st Confederate note. They seem to be affordable.

Very cool note Joe2007! I never got into currency when it was cheaper. I did have a great friend and mentor "the late" Stephen Taylor, that collected paper, he introduced me to the Boss of confederate currency collecting Col. Grover Criswell! I wish I had one of his old checks he wrote out, (I did at one time) but cashed them (needed the money, from some coins he purchased from me). One of the greatest Civil War Confederate collectors of all time! http://www.pcgs.com/News/Grover-C-C...wing-A-HeartTo this day collectors still use his catalog numbering system and refer to his books on the subject. R.I.P. to both Grover and Stephen, you are missed!

I started out collecting currency but I really like the coins better. I purchased a 1861 $100 dollar confederate T-5 note when I was collecting from a dealer who must not have known what he had for $300 dollars when I was getting out of the currency I sold it for $1400. I really liked the note but I think it is easier to take care of coins than it is currency. I love civil war stuff period and wished I would have never sold the note. I also collect buttons and bullets when I get them for the right price. History is just my thing.
