I suppose it could be a die chip, but I would guess it's post-mint damage inflicted years ago which wore down to its current appearance as the coin circulated.

Zero chance it is the 42/1-D variety, IMO.

PMD or maybe die chip. Almost looks like the horizontal part from the right side of the 4 being knocked or scraped downward.

Or it's a 19412

Whatever it is is is defintely NOT a 42/1 too bad though! One can still dream. I know I do.
