I have a "1962 Silver Penny" It is almost identical to a standard 1962 D copper penny BUT visually it it seems to be a bit thicker so using a micrometer it is slightly thicker and does NOT have a mint stamp
I thought it might be a penny stamped on a dime blank but it doesn't have the textured edge if that means anything I'm not sure.. also I have scrapped the edge and it is not a silver plating
I'm not really trying to find a monetary value was just intrigued by its rarity
Can anyone shed some light on this coin

Is the penny the same size & weight as a copper penny? The mint stamps are automatically added to the dies, so it should have a mint mark. It would almost have to be plated... Can you post a picture of it? It would help...

to CCF!

While a cent stamped on a dime planchet is possible, it sounds like this is not and you may have a novelty piece. Please feel free to post pictures here for additional information.

Cheers!

to CCF biggreek43. Photos would be very nice.Weight would help also.It sounds like a plating job as of now.If you go to ebay you can see pics of a cent on a dime planchet.

If it was a cent on a dime PLANCHET, it would not have the reeding that a dime would have. If it was struck on an already-struck dime, the reeding would appear. Reeding is put on the coin when it is struck, it's not on the blank. :)

That said, it sounds like a plated novelty. This would explain why it is slightly thicker, and, of course, why it's silver. Still, WELCOME to the forum, and keep looking for those errors!

most likely it was rubbed with mercury back in the day when mercury was no big deal
and easy to get. I remember back in school (70s) playing with mercury in science class ..fun stuff

just like 1967 and 1962 mentioned ..... most coins like this are from 70s and earlier if found

now its on the top posion list

The important question is "What does it weigh?" (In grams to at least one decimal place, two places would be even better.) Until that question is answered any response is mere speculation.
